Not always. A sequel’s critical acclaim does not tell you whether you need to play its predecessor first. Some games share a franchise name but tell largely separate stories; others continue the same characters’ plot, where the earlier game adds important context. Since no particular sequel is named here, there is no responsible game-specific prerequisite list. Check how its publisher describes the story and new-player onboarding, then decide how much background you want before starting.
Does a sequel always require playing the earlier game?
No. A numbered title, familiar setting or franchise label is not enough to establish that an earlier game is essential. The key question is whether the new game begins a substantially separate story or continues events that the previous one set in motion.
That distinction is visible in Square Enix’s own description of the FINAL FANTASY series and the FINAL FANTASY VII remake games. The company describes almost all mainline FINAL FANTASY games as standalone adventures with distinct worlds and characters, while also recognizing direct sequels. Its editorial guide, dated December 10, 2025, says of the mostly standalone mainline series: “The actual ‘correct’ answer, of course, is… any of them.” That is useful guidance for that part of the series—not a rule that applies to every sequel in every franchise.

But those bonuses are different from a true prerequisite: information that the new game assumes you know in order to follow its central conflict.

What should you check before starting?
Look for evidence about the game’s story relationship and its intended audience, not just its review scores or place in a release sequence. A few minutes spent checking the publisher’s description can help you distinguish a sequel that welcomes newcomers from a direct continuation designed around an earlier chapter.
- Is it called a direct continuation? Terms such as “second part,” “next chapter” or “continues the story of” suggest that the earlier entry contains relevant context. They do not, by themselves, prove that new players will be lost.
- Does the publisher address newcomers? Look for an explicit statement that the game is designed for new players, offers an independent starting point or introduces its characters and premise. Such language is stronger evidence than assuming the number in the title means either “start here” or “you must start at the beginning.”
- Are the same characters and unresolved events central? A recurring cast and ongoing conflict are clues that the earlier story may matter more than it would in an anthology or a game with a new setting.
- Is an official recap available? If the publisher or game itself provides one, it may be a practical middle route. Confirm that it exists for your particular game; a recap offered by one sequel does not establish that another has one.
- Can you conveniently access the predecessor? Availability, the device you play on and the time you have can change what makes sense. Do not assume every earlier entry is included with the sequel or available in the same format.
Give more weight to statements about story continuity and onboarding than to a simple genre label, a shared universe or a sequel number. If the publisher’s description is unclear, treat the decision as a preference about context—not as proof that the earlier game is mandatory.
What is the difference between a shared universe and a direct story continuation?
A shared universe means games occupy related fictional territory; a direct continuation means the new plot picks up important people, events or unresolved questions from an earlier one. The second relationship creates a stronger reason to play in order, but even a direct continuation can be presented in a way that helps newcomers catch up.
In a shared universe, two games might have different protagonists, locations or conflicts. Familiarity can add texture, but the new story may explain what a first-time player needs. In a direct continuation, knowledge of earlier events may help you understand why characters behave as they do or why a particular outcome matters. Whether that knowledge is necessary depends on the sequel’s own storytelling and onboarding.

It is also useful to separate three kinds of missing context:
- Plot comprehension: You cannot follow the main conflict or understand why a central event is happening.
- Emotional context: You understand the events, but relationships or turning points carry less weight because you do not know the characters’ history.
- References and rewards: You miss callbacks, returning characters or details that primarily reward longtime players.
The first is the strongest case for playing earlier material or using an official recap. The other two may affect enjoyment without preventing you from understanding the new game. A sequel can be accessible and still be more satisfying in order; those ideas are not contradictory.
Does the FINAL FANTASY VII remake sequel work as a starting point?
Square Enix presents FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH as both the second game in a remake trilogy and a game designed to welcome newcomers. That makes it a useful example of why “sequel” does not automatically mean “inaccessible,” while still leaving a reason for returning players to begin with the earlier remake chapter.
Square Enix’s description establishes two things at once: REBIRTH continues a planned remake sequence, and the publisher says it was designed to welcome new players. A newcomer can therefore consider starting with REBIRTH without assuming that the title alone makes it impossible to follow. A player who values seeing Cloud and his allies’ story unfold from the earlier remake chapter may prefer to start with FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE first.

Square Enix also describes a Twin Pack containing REMAKE and REBIRTH. That confirms an option involving both games in the publisher’s description; it does not establish a current price, a physical edition or whether a particular retailer has it available. Check the platform and format on the listing before buying. There is no need to purchase earlier numbered FINAL FANTASY games simply because they belong to the same mainline series: Square Enix describes most of those mainline entries as distinct, standalone adventures.
This example should not be generalized to an unnamed sequel. The publisher’s welcome-to-newcomers statement is evidence about REBIRTH, not about every second, third or later game in another series.
Can you start with DOOM II without playing DOOM?
GOG explicitly identifies DOOM II as a sequel to DOOM and offers a digital collection containing both games. Its product description establishes a way to get both entries together; it does not say that playing DOOM first is mandatory.

That is a useful contrast with a story-focused continuation: a storefront’s use of “sequel” confirms the relationship between entries, but does not on its own establish how much prior plot knowledge the new game requires. If you are interested in the collection, use the product page to confirm what it contains and its current availability. The listing’s collection details are not evidence that every sequel needs to be played in release order.

Should you play in release order or start with the acclaimed sequel?
Choose release order when you care most about following returning characters from their earliest relevant story, seeing the narrative unfold as originally presented or avoiding references that assume prior familiarity. Start with the newer game when you want to play it now and its publisher presents it as newcomer-friendly or gives it a self-contained premise.
Quick decision:
- Start with the sequel if its publisher explicitly welcomes newcomers, you want to play it now, and you are comfortable with the possibility of missed references or lighter emotional context.
- Play the predecessor first if the sequel is described as a continuation and following the characters’ story from the beginning matters more to you than getting to the newer game immediately.
- Use an official recap if one is available for that exact game and you want the central background without playing the earlier entry. Check the publisher or the game’s own menus rather than assuming a recap exists.
- Pause to verify if the description is vague and you would be frustrated by unexplained plot developments. Check the publisher’s FAQ, game description or other official material for its intended starting point.
Time is part of the decision. Playing every predecessor can be a substantial commitment, especially in a long-running series; starting later may be the better choice if the publisher says it is approachable. Conversely, if the earlier game is readily available and the characters’ history is your main reason for playing, the extra time may be worthwhile. These are trade-offs, not universal rules about the “correct” order.

If the publisher does not say whether the game welcomes newcomers and the story relationship remains unclear, avoid turning uncertainty into a firm rule. You can decide based on your tolerance for missing context, or look for an official explanation of where the story begins.
In practical terms, ask one focused question: Will I be annoyed if I understand the main events but miss why returning characters or relationships matter? If yes, begin with the predecessor when it is accessible. If no, and you are eager to play the sequel, start there and use only an official recap if you need one. Without a named game, there is no reliable way to say more specifically which earlier entries are essential.
