Yes—an Android phone can serve as a small Laravel development environment. Claudio Ribeiro’s SitePoint tutorial describes using Termux with PHP, Git, Composer, an editor, Laravel’s local server, and SQLite. Treat it as a reported workflow, not a guarantee that the same commands or dependencies work on every current Android device: check the instructions for the Laravel version you plan to use.
What the Android Laravel setup involves
Termux provides a terminal emulator and Linux environment on Android. In Ribeiro’s tutorial, it is the starting point for installing the tools used in a basic Laravel workflow: PHP to run the application, Git and Composer for development and dependencies, and a text editor such as Vim, Emacs, or Nano.
The tutorial then checks PHP by starting its built-in server, creates a Laravel project with Composer, runs the app with Laravel’s Artisan server, and configures SQLite before running database migrations. These are the steps Ribeiro reported using; his article was first published in 2017 and updated in 2024. Its older commands and setup details should not be treated as current installation guidance.
See Ribeiro’s SitePoint tutorial for the historical walkthrough and Termux’s official overview for its description of the Android environment. The Termux overview does not certify that this complete Laravel workflow works on every device or software combination.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
How to approach a current Laravel install
Laravel’s current installation documentation is the better starting point for a new project. It calls for PHP and Composer, as well as the Laravel installer, and recommends Node with NPM or Bun to compile frontend assets. Consult the guide for the Laravel version you intend to install rather than copying an older Composer command or installer verification value from the 2017 tutorial.
- Check the current requirements. Use the Laravel 13.x installation guide to review its setup steps and dependencies. Whether the needed packages are available and compatible in your Termux environment depends on your device and installed software.
- Install and create the project using current Laravel instructions. The historical tutorial uses Composer to create its project, but current Laravel guidance also documents the Laravel installer. Choose the method documented for your target version.
- Run the app locally as documented. Laravel’s guide covers serving a created application for local development. Ribeiro’s tutorial used
php artisan serve; verify the command and expected behavior against the version you installed. - Configure persistence and migrations. Ribeiro used SQLite. Laravel’s current database guide describes SQLite as a database stored in a file and specifies SQLite 3.26.0 or newer. Check the current configuration instructions and confirm the SQLite version available in your environment.
- Add frontend tooling if your project needs it. Laravel recommends Node/NPM or Bun for compiling frontend assets; a basic PHP-only experiment may not exercise that part of the workflow.
Laravel’s database documentation covers current database configuration. Its deployment requirements concern production deployment, not proof that a particular Android or Termux package build supports Laravel. Do not use a server requirement as a compatibility claim for a phone.

Is a phone comfortable enough for development?
Ribeiro said he completed the setup on an Android phone and considered it useful for small development tasks or urgent fixes, while acknowledging that it was not a productivity peak. That is his assessment, not a comparative test or performance benchmark.
| Setup | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|
| Phone only | More portable, but typing and working with code on a small screen can be less comfortable. |
| Tablet with a Bluetooth keyboard | Offers more screen area and a more comfortable typing arrangement; Ribeiro suggested it as probably ideal, not as a requirement or a tested performance advantage. |
Termux offers keyboard shortcuts that can help when working without a physical keyboard, as described in the SitePoint tutorial. The useful question is whether your device, editor, and project are manageable for the task—not whether a phone can replace a laptop for every kind of development.

What is and is not established about compatibility
The available official Termux overview describes the app as a terminal emulator and Linux environment for Android, but does not establish compatibility for a particular phone, Android version, Termux release, PHP package, or current Laravel dependency set. Laravel’s documentation explains the framework’s supported installation and database workflow; it does not certify that every step works in Termux.
Accordingly, consider Android a plausible option for experimenting, learning, or handling a small task when the current dependencies install successfully. Before relying on it for a project, verify the complete toolchain on your own device, including PHP, Composer, required extensions, frontend tooling if needed, and the database configuration. A command from Ribeiro’s older tutorial may need to change—or may not work in your environment.
