GNOME Boxes can manage virtual machines, but running it on a Chromebook is conditional—not a guaranteed way to run Windows, Ubuntu, or other guests. Boxes relies on QEMU/KVM, while Google lists hardware acceleration as unsupported in the ChromeOS Linux development environment (Crostini). Check your Chromebook and ChromeOS version for KVM access before investing time in a multi-VM setup.
Can GNOME Boxes run virtual machines on a Chromebook?
Possibly, but the available official documentation does not establish which Chromebook models or ChromeOS releases expose the KVM access Boxes needs inside Crostini. Google’s Linux on Chromebook documentation lists hardware acceleration—including GPU and video decode—as unsupported. That is a significant compatibility and performance caveat, not a promise that every VM will fail or work.
GNOME Boxes is a Linux app, not a native ChromeOS hypervisor. On a Chromebook it would run inside the Linux development environment. GNOME describes Boxes as using QEMU/KVM, libvirt-glib, and SPICE; KVM uses processor hardware virtualization features. Installing the Boxes interface alone does not show that Crostini can access the required backend.
| Path | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Try GNOME Boxes in Crostini | Someone who specifically needs local Linux guests and can verify KVM access on the exact device and ChromeOS version. | Google lists hardware acceleration as unsupported in Linux on Chromebook, and official model-level compatibility information is not established. |
| Use Linux apps directly in Crostini | Linux command-line tools, editors, and IDEs on a Chromebook that supports Linux. | Avoids relying on a nested guest VM, but does not provide a collection of full virtual machines. |
If you are choosing a Chromebook for this purpose, compare its RAM, available storage, CPU architecture and performance, support status, and—above all—verified KVM or nested-virtualization access for the ChromeOS release you plan to use. More RAM alone cannot guarantee compatibility.

Enable the Linux development environment
ChromeOS Linux is off by default. Google says setup may take 10 minutes or more and may be blocked on work- or school-managed devices.
- Open Settings.
- Go to About ChromeOS, then Developers.
- Choose Set up beside Linux development environment and follow the prompts.
The environment is Debian-based. Google’s ChromeOS Linux developer guide explains that Linux apps can be installed with sudo apt install. A ChromeOS folder can be made available to Linux from the Files app using Share with Linux; shared folders appear in Linux under /mnt/chromeos.

Do not treat a generic Boxes installation command as guaranteed to work on every Chromebook. The official documentation cited here does not establish that the package installation route, KVM device access, or a Flatpak route is available on every Crostini setup. First verify the backend on your exact device and ChromeOS release; without it, installing the app may not produce usable virtual machines.
What GNOME Boxes needs—and what its features mean here
GNOME lists QEMU/KVM, libvirt-glib, and SPICE among Boxes’ technologies. QEMU can emulate another machine architecture; its near-native virtualization path runs guest code on the host processor using KVM. KVM is a Linux kernel module that relies on processor hardware virtualization features. Crostini must expose the necessary host-side access for that path to work.

GNOME’s Boxes system requirements recommend at least 8GB of RAM and 20GB of free disk space for efficient use. These are general GNOME recommendations, not Chromebook-specific minimums or a guarantee that a guest will run well. The page does not state a publication year. It also describes fallback allocations, when vendor information is unavailable, of 500MB RAM and a maximum 20GB of storage; these are defaults, not suggested Chromebook settings.
GNOME Boxes’ general feature set includes resource limits, snapshots, USB redirection, clipboard and file/folder sharing, automatic display resizing, and selected 3D acceleration. The GNOME app page also lists automatic installation options for CentOS Stream, Debian, Fedora, Microsoft Windows, openSUSE, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Ubuntu. These are Boxes features on supported hosts; their availability and performance through Crostini can differ. In particular, do not assume Windows, gaming, or graphics acceleration will work on a Chromebook.

Create a guest from an ISO or supported download
Once Boxes is installed and its backend is confirmed, create a virtual machine from an operating-system image, local ISO, CD/DVD or USB installation media, or an OS offered through Boxes’ supported download page. GNOME’s VM creation guide describes the workflow:
- Open Boxes and select the + button.
- Choose a detected image, local ISO, installation media, or a supported OS download.
- Review the guest’s memory and disk allocation before creating it. Keep enough resources available for ChromeOS and Crostini as well as the guest.
- Create the VM and proceed with the guest operating system’s installer or first-run setup.
Boxes’ ability to offer an OS download does not establish that the download or resulting VM will run successfully in Crostini. Confirm backend access and leave adequate host resources before creating several guests.

Improve guest integration where supported
GNOME says guest tools can improve input handling, automatic screen-resolution adjustment, clipboard use, and file transfer. For Debian-based guests such as Debian, Ubuntu, or Linux Mint, GNOME’s guest-tools guidance gives this guest-side command:
sudo apt install spice-vdagent
This installs integration tools inside the guest; it does not provide KVM access to the Chromebook or resolve a host-side virtualization limitation.
Protect shared files and troubleshoot Linux apps
Google warns that Linux apps share the same sandbox: a harmful Linux app can affect other Linux apps, though not the rest of the Chromebook. Files and permissions shared with Linux are available to all Linux apps. USB and microphone permissions are not shared by default in Google’s developer setup guidance. Share only the files and devices a guest needs, and back up the Linux environment before experimenting. The ChromeOS Linux guide explains how to shut down the Linux container separately and back it up or restore it.
- If Linux apps misbehave: Google recommends restarting the Chromebook and updating packages in the Linux Terminal with
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. Restart again if needed. - If the Linux container needs a clean restart: Use the Terminal shelf icon to shut it down, then reopen a Linux app to start it again.
- If Boxes opens but cannot create a guest: Recheck whether the exact Chromebook and ChromeOS version expose the required KVM access. Guest tools and VM settings cannot fix missing host-side access.
GNOME’s Boxes page, which listed version 50.0 released on March 14, 2026, describes the app’s broad guest and management features. That release information is time-sensitive; it does not establish Chromebook compatibility.
