Not natively. Folding@home’s current v8.5 guide lists Windows, macOS, and Linux—not ChromeOS. A Chromebook may be able to run the client through its Linux environment, but that is a device-dependent workaround, not official ChromeOS support. Folding@home’s site administrator says the Linux client may work on Intel- and ARM-based Chromebooks, while warning that hardware, cooling, and work-unit deadlines matter. Folding@home’s client guide and a December 2024 forum response describe the current distinction.
Does Folding@home work on ChromeOS?
There is no native ChromeOS client or folding-core support listed in the current guide. Folding@home’s v8.5 client documentation covers Windows, macOS, and Linux. That means installing or opening a ChromeOS app is not an officially documented way to make a Chromebook fold.
A Folding@home site administrator, replying on December 12, 2024, said: “The client should work on a Chromebook running Linux, either Intel or ARM based. There is no client or folding core support for ChromeOS.” This points to a possible Linux-on-Chromebook workaround, not a guarantee that every Chromebook model or Linux configuration will work.
What are the practical options?
| Approach | Support status | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Use a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer | These operating systems are listed in Folding@home’s v8.5 Client Guide. | Follow the installation instructions for the applicable operating system. |
| Run the client in Linux on a Chromebook | A Folding@home site administrator said it may work on Intel- or ARM-based Chromebooks; this is not native ChromeOS support. See the forum reply. | Compatibility and useful performance depend on the Chromebook, its Linux setup, cooling, and whether it can finish assigned work units before their deadlines. The forum reply does not provide a validated setup procedure for each model. |
If you are considering the Chromebook route, first confirm that your model can run the Linux environment you plan to use and that you can install and operate a Linux client there. Check the official guide for the client’s current Linux instructions. The cited administrator response does not establish model-by-model compatibility or an easy, terminal-free installation path.

Does Web Control let you fold in the browser?
No. Folding@home’s v8 Web Control is a browser-based interface for a Folding@home client running on the same computer. It lets you control the client; it does not perform the folding by itself. Opening Web Control on a Chromebook without a running client will not make that Chromebook contribute computing work. See the client guide for the interface and client context.
What can limit folding on a Chromebook?
- Processor capacity: The assigned work may demand more computing power than a Chromebook can provide comfortably.
- Cooling: Sustained computation can be constrained by how well the particular device handles heat.
- Work-unit deadlines: Folding@home work must be completed within its assigned deadline; a slower device may not finish in time.
- Device-specific setup: The administrator’s general statement does not verify every Chromebook, processor, or Linux configuration.
These are reasons to treat a Chromebook as a possible experiment rather than a dependable folding machine. The administrator’s compatibility note is a general response, not a model-specific test or performance guarantee.

What does Folding@home contribute to disease research?
Folding@home describes its project as using idle computer power for biomedical research. Volunteers contribute spare computing cycles to simulations, and the resulting work is returned to the project. Its examples of research areas include cancer, COVID-19, Alzheimer’s, and Ebola. This is a contribution to research, not a treatment or cure for an individual volunteer.
Folding@home’s homepage says the project has produced more than 500 peer-reviewed publications since its launch in October 2000; the page’s count is displayed without a separately dated publication year and was accessed in 2026. The organization also reports a historical peak of 2.43 exaflops in April 2020 during COVID-19, alongside a claim about identifying a potential antiviral in animal testing. That peak is a dated historical figure, not current performance. See Folding@home’s homepage and its FAQ for the project’s explanation of participation and contribution tracking.

Does an old browser-client announcement mean ChromeOS is supported?
No. Folding@home published a June 25, 2014 announcement about a Chrome Portable Native Client experiment. That is historical context, not evidence of a current ChromeOS client. The v8.5 guide and the administrator’s December 2024 response are more relevant to today’s compatibility question. See the 2014 announcement.
