Yes, Kubernetes can run on Raspberry Pi, and K3s documents how to deploy it on Pi and other ARM devices. But that does not mean a cluster of small boards will meet every cryptocurrency node’s needs. The blockchain client’s storage, memory, CPU, sync mode and network requirements—not Kubernetes alone—determine whether a particular setup is practical.

For a lab or learning project, a Pi cluster can be a reasonable way to explore container orchestration and node software. For a node you expect to keep in sync reliably, size the hardware for the specific client first, use SSD storage, and leave room for K3s and the operating system. The requirements below show why there is no universal Pi-cluster bill of materials.

Separate Kubernetes requirements from blockchain requirements

Kubernetes is the orchestrator: it schedules workloads onto cluster machines and manages them. It does not pool every board’s CPU and memory into one larger computer for a single node process. In practice, the machine that runs a blockchain client needs enough resources for that client, while the cluster also needs capacity for its operating system and Kubernetes services.

Kubernetes documentation includes Raspberry Pi among machines that can host a kubeadm cluster. K3s, a lightweight Kubernetes distribution, publishes Raspberry Pi and ARM-specific guidance. Those facts establish that the orchestration layer can run on Pi hardware; they do not establish that a particular Pi model or cluster size can keep up with a particular blockchain client.

Compare the published resource figures

The figures below are specific to the cited projects and settings. Blockchain data and client recommendations can change, so check the linked requirements pages when planning a deployment.

System or workload Published figures What the figures mean
K3s server Minimum 2 CPU cores and 2 GB RAM, per the K3s requirements page. This is a K3s minimum, not a complete allocation for a blockchain workload.
K3s agent Minimum 1 CPU core and 512 MB RAM, per the K3s requirements page. This is an agent minimum; it does not include the resources a node client may need.
Bitcoin Core, default settings Bare minimum 750 GB disk, 512 MB RAM, 250 MB/day download (8 GB/month) and 5 GB/day upload (150 GB/month); the page also lists a one-time 740 GB initial download. These estimates are for Bitcoin Core with default settings, as listed on its requirements page.
Bitcoin Core, custom settings Bare minimum 7 GB disk, 256 MB RAM, 150 MB/day download and 10 MB/day upload; the page still lists a one-time 740 GB initial download. Do not treat the custom-settings disk figure as the default full-node footprint. The page does not make these different settings interchangeable.
Ethereum node Minimum 2+ CPU cores, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB NVMe SSD and 25+ Mbit/s bandwidth; 32 GB RAM is recommended for stability. The page also gives larger recommended specs, including 4 TB NVMe. These are the figures on ethereum.org’s node guide. Client choice and sync mode affect requirements.

The contrast matters: a board or cluster that meets K3s’s baseline may be far below a blockchain client’s stated requirements. Bitcoin Core’s custom-settings disk minimum is also a different case from its default-settings figure, and its initial download estimate remains substantial in both cases.

Plan storage before choosing the cluster layout

K3s recommends external SSD storage on Raspberry Pi and other ARM devices, stating: “If deploying K3s on a Raspberry Pi or other ARM devices, it is recommended that you use an external SSD.” K3s gives a specific reason: etcd is write-intensive, and SD cards and eMMC cannot handle that I/O load. See the K3s storage guidance.

  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit

There are two storage concerns to account for: K3s’s own data and the blockchain client’s chain data. A blockchain data disk needs enough capacity for the selected client and mode, plus room for growth; the K3s recommendation for external SSDs addresses the Pi’s orchestration storage needs, not a guarantee that a given SSD has enough capacity for any chain.

For the examples in the table, Bitcoin Core’s default-settings bare minimum is 750 GB, while ethereum.org lists 2 TB NVMe as a minimum and includes 4 TB NVMe in larger recommended specifications. Those figures are not directly interchangeable: they refer to different clients and operating conditions. The Raspberry Pi cluster tutorial’s 1 TB SSD example is a parts demonstration, not proof that 1 TB is sufficient for a particular node.

Leave memory and I/O headroom for K3s

K3s’s minimum server and agent figures are not the same as resources left over for a node process. In a K3s profile on a Pi 4B sharing the device with a workload, the server used 1,588 MB RAM with Kine/SQLite and 1,613 MB with embedded etcd. The same profile recorded 10 IOPS and 500 KiB/s with under 10 ms latency for Kine/SQLite, and 50 IOPS and 250 KiB/s with under 5 ms latency for embedded etcd. These are measurements from the documented test configuration, not universal sizing guarantees for other Pi generations or workloads. See K3s resource profiling.

That profile makes a practical point: a K3s server can consume a meaningful share of a small board’s memory before accounting for the blockchain client. Treat the Pi 4B results as an example of overhead, not a formula for adding boards or predicting client performance. Size the machine expected to run the client with K3s and the OS in mind, and avoid planning around bare minimums if the node must remain available continuously.

Choose an architecture for the goal

One Pi for a learning lab

A single board can be the simplest place to learn how K3s deploys and manages workloads. It is only a viable node host if that board, its storage and network connection meet the chosen client’s needs. A successful Kubernetes deployment alone does not show that blockchain sync has completed or that the node will remain caught up.

Several Pis for orchestration practice

Multiple boards let you experiment with scheduling and cluster administration, but each board remains a separate machine. Adding the boards’ RAM totals does not give one blockchain process that whole memory pool. You still need to place the client on a machine that can support it, and you need to provide suitable storage and networking for that workload.

A dependable node service

If the goal is continuous, dependable service rather than experimentation, do not infer high availability or adequate performance from the existence of a cluster. The cited documentation does not validate a particular Raspberry Pi cluster for a particular cryptocurrency client. Confirm that the chosen client’s requirements are met on the machine where it will run, and account for storage, power, network access and administration.

Assemble the hardware around the client

Start with the client and sync mode, then select the boards and supporting parts. The Raspberry Pi cluster tutorial is useful as a physical-build example, but it is not a blockchain-node build or performance test.

  • Boards: Select enough Pi hardware for your Kubernetes learning or service design, but do not assume a specific board count guarantees blockchain performance.
  • External SSD: K3s recommends an external SSD for Pi/ARM deployments. Capacity must match the selected client and its operating mode, with allowance for growth.
  • Storage connection: Raspberry Pi’s tutorial demonstrates a 1 TB SSD connected using a USB 3 to SATA adapter. Verify connector and model compatibility for the hardware you choose.
  • Network and power: The tutorial’s PoE approach uses PoE+ HATs and an appropriate PoE+ switch. Its example is one way to handle a multi-board build, not a requirement for every cluster.
  • Internet connection: Account for initial synchronization as well as ongoing traffic. Bitcoin Core publishes daily upload and download estimates in its requirements; ethereum.org advises an unmetered connection because sync and broadcast can exceed data limits.
  • Physical upkeep: Plan cable routing, cooling, power delivery and a way to administer the boards. These practical choices affect maintainability but do not replace client-specific resource requirements.

See Raspberry Pi’s cluster tutorial for its eight-Pi example and the SSD and PoE components it demonstrates. Its parts list should be treated as an illustration of cluster construction, not a validated cryptocurrency-node specification.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Name the client and mode. Identify the cryptocurrency client and sync mode you intend to run; requirements can differ substantially between clients and modes.
  2. Size the client machine. Compare its CPU, memory, storage and bandwidth requirements against one Pi’s resources, leaving capacity for the operating system and K3s.
  3. Choose storage deliberately. Use external SSD storage for K3s on Pi/ARM as K3s recommends, then check that capacity and interface also suit the blockchain data.
  4. Estimate network use. Include the initial sync and recurring traffic, and confirm that the connection’s data allowance will support them.
  5. Decide whether the project is a lab or a service. A lab can accept experimentation and tuning; continuous service needs a suitable host and a design whose performance and availability have actually been established.

If a candidate Pi setup cannot satisfy the selected client’s requirements, adding Kubernetes nodes does not by itself resolve the mismatch. Reconsider the client mode or use hardware with sufficient per-machine resources for that workload.

What the published evidence does—and does not—establish

The cited documentation establishes that Kubernetes and K3s can run on Raspberry Pi-class ARM systems, and it gives client-specific resource figures and a K3s SSD recommendation. It does not establish a specific Pi model, board count or cluster configuration that runs Bitcoin Core or an Ethereum client at a defined performance level. Treat any proposed cluster as a design to validate against the current client requirements, rather than assuming that Kubernetes compatibility proves node suitability.
