Usually, no. Meta does not document a way to retrieve Messenger messages that were permanently deleted. You may be able to restore encrypted chat history that was saved in secure storage, but that is different from undoing a deletion. First identify what happened: a missing chat, a new device, deleted secure storage, or a conversation you intentionally deleted all have different outcomes.
What “deleted” means determines what you can do
A conversation that is missing from one device is not necessarily permanently deleted. It might be saved in Messenger secure storage and available to restore on a new device. By contrast, Meta says deleting secure storage permanently deletes its encrypted chat history, and Messenger cannot restore that backup. Meta’s documented recovery steps cover restoring saved history, not reversing permanent deletion. Meta’s Messenger Help Centre explains the secure-storage limits.
- History missing after changing devices: try restoring previously saved encrypted history from secure storage.
- Secure storage was deleted: Meta says Messenger cannot restore that backup.
- You deleted a conversation or message: Meta’s guidance reviewed here does not describe an undelete option.
- Your Facebook account was deleted: account-deletion guidance is a separate matter; it does not promise that deleted Messenger conversations can be recovered.
Restore saved encrypted history on a new device
If your encrypted history was saved in secure storage before you changed devices, use Messenger’s supported restore method. Meta’s PIN instructions require secure storage to be enabled and use the PIN you previously set up. Meta also points to other restore methods, including Apple or Google account options as they become available. The exact options can depend on what is available for your account and device.
- Open Messenger on the device where you want to see your chats and sign in to the relevant account.
- When Messenger offers to restore your encrypted chat history, choose the secure-storage restore option.
- Enter the PIN you set up for secure storage, or select another restore method if Messenger offers one for your account.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and check whether the previously saved history appears.
This process restores history that was already saved; it does not recover a backup after secure storage has been deleted. Meta states: “Messenger can’t reset your security method or restore your backup for you.” See Meta’s instructions for resetting the security method.

Do not delete or reset secure storage to try to recover messages
Deleting secure storage is not a troubleshooting step for retrieving messages. Meta says the encrypted chat history is permanently deleted when secure storage is deleted, and Messenger cannot restore the backup. If the history may still be saved, avoid deleting secure storage while trying the available restore options.
Can “Download Your Information” recover deleted Messenger messages?
Meta provides tools to access or download account information, including options to download all or selected categories. The guidance reviewed describes those tools as ways to obtain information available for download; it does not say a new download can undelete messages already removed from Messenger. Treat a download as a way to check for available account data, not as a guaranteed recovery method. Meta’s information-access guidance.

If you are considering deleting your Facebook account, Meta advises downloading information beforehand. Its account-deletion guidance says that after permanent account deletion, you cannot retrieve information you added. That does not mean cancelling account deletion will restore Messenger messages that were independently deleted. Read Meta’s account-deletion guidance.

If you need the content rather than its return to your own chat, ask the other participant whether they still have it. Meta says copies of messages sent to friends may remain in their inboxes after account deletion. A copy from the other person may let you read or save the text, but it does not restore the conversation to your Messenger account.

Community chats have a separate download-before-deletion option
For a Messenger Community chat scheduled for deletion, Meta provides a way to download chat information from the deletion notice before the scheduled removal. Follow the download option in the Community chat banner while it is still available. This is a preventive download, not a way to recover a Community chat after permanent deletion, and it should not be treated as a recovery method for ordinary private conversations. What to try next
- If the messages vanished after a device change, try the secure-storage restore flow with the PIN or another method Messenger offers.
- If secure storage was deleted, Meta says Messenger cannot restore its backup.
- If you intentionally deleted messages, check whether the other participant can provide a copy; the sources reviewed do not establish an account-download undelete route.
- If the conversation is a Community chat that has not yet been permanently deleted, use its advance-download option before the removal date.
