What part is reportedly replaceable?
Tom’s Guide reported on October 1, 2026, that Apple hardware engineering vice president Kate Bergeron described a replaceable cover layer over the iPhone Duo’s inner folding display. She said, “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.” That statement establishes reported replaceability; it is not a repair manual or an instruction for owners to remove the layer themselves. The built-in layer is distinct from both an ordinary screen protector and the folding display panel beneath it. The report does not establish that the same replaceable part exists on standard iPhone models.

If the issue appears confined to the inner surface, describe what you see and ask Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider whether it is the reported cover-layer issue and what service applies to your exact model. Possible damage to the display underneath
Problems such as image defects or touch response issues may involve more than the surface layer. Don’t assume a cover-layer replacement will address them; request an assessment of the display and the device. Without those model-specific instructions, there is no evidence-backed basis here for a peeling technique or for using heat, solvents, blades, or other tools. An ordinary screen protector is not a replacement for the built-in layer. Replacing a full display assembly or undertaking glass refurbishment would be a different repair, not an equivalent shortcut.
Apple’s Repair Assistant guidance says repair manuals indicate when post-repair software is recommended, and that on some models an unfinished repair can leave a part performing below a calibrated part. What the reported service fee does—and does not—tell you
Tom’s Guide reported a $19 service fee for the cover layer for AppleCare customers in the United States. The report did not establish a price for owners without coverage or prices in other regions.
