Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Usually, you can use your own router for Wi-Fi and routing, but that is different from replacing the Giga Hub as the fibre gateway. Bell’s replacement instructions keep a Bell modem with a FIBRE port in the connection path; the available sources do not establish that a generic retail router can plug directly into Bell fibre and replace it.
First, decide what you want to replace
“Replace the Giga Hub” can mean two different things:
- Change your Wi-Fi or routing: Connect a personal router behind Bell’s gateway and use it for your home network. The Giga Hub remains connected to the fibre.
- Remove the fibre gateway: Connect a different device directly to Bell’s fibre service. Bell’s published replacement steps describe connecting the fibre cable to the FIBRE port on a Bell modem, not using an arbitrary retail router or optical device.
If your goal is better Wi-Fi or more control over routing, focus on a router-behind-the-gateway setup. If you want to eliminate Bell’s gateway, confirm the exact equipment and requirements with Bell before buying anything; the available documentation does not certify a generic direct replacement.
What Bell documents about modem replacement
Bell’s official modem-replacement instructions cover the Home Hub 4000 and Giga Hub. They describe replacing one Bell modem with another Bell modem that has a FIBRE port.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
- Disconnect the old modem and connect the fibre cable to the new modem’s FIBRE port.
- If needed, connect a computer to the modem by Ethernet.
- Connect the modem to power and wait for the connection process to finish.
- Check that all three lights match the instructions and that the status reads “Fibe Internet: Connected.”
These steps explain Bell’s modem-to-modem replacement procedure. They are not confirmation that a third-party router has the fibre interface, service provisioning, or compatibility needed to take over the gateway role.
Using your own router while keeping the Giga Hub
Bell Community guidance describes connecting a customer-owned router to a Bell gateway, with the connection method depending on the service region. An accepted response dated January 23, 2023 says true bridge mode is unavailable on the modems it discusses and names these approaches:
Rank #2
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Region named in the community response | Connection method described | Important qualification |

| Ontario and Quebec | PPPoE or Advanced DMZ | Community guidance from 2023, not a current universal compatibility guarantee. |
| Atlantic Canada | DHCP | Community guidance from 2023, not a current universal compatibility guarantee. |

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Check these details before choosing a router
Router recommendations depend on more than the device’s Wi-Fi features. Establish the following before purchasing or configuring one:
- Your Bell service region and Internet plan.
- The exact Giga Hub or Home Hub model and its current firmware.
- Whether the router will sit behind the gateway or is intended to connect directly to fibre.
- Whether Bell TV or phone services also rely on the gateway.
- The WAN connection method required for your specific service and whether your router supports it.
- Whether Bell’s instructions or support confirm the proposed setup for your equipment.
The available sources do not provide a current, authoritative list of third-party routers tested for direct replacement or a model-by-model performance comparison. Do not treat a router’s advertised WAN features as proof that it can replace Bell’s fibre gateway.

Which approach fits your goal?
| Your goal | Practical approach | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Use a different router for Wi-Fi or routing | Keep the Giga Hub connected to fibre and connect your router behind it, following instructions verified for your region and equipment. | The applicable WAN method and settings depend on your current Bell setup. |
| Replace a faulty Bell modem with another Bell modem | Follow Bell’s replacement steps for a Bell modem with a FIBRE port. | Use the instructions for the exact model Bell provides. |
| Remove the Giga Hub and connect a retail device directly to fibre | Do not assume this will work; confirm requirements and compatibility with Bell first. | The sources do not establish generic retail-router compatibility for direct fibre gateway replacement. |
