Yes—you can ask Steam for a refund after playing more than two hours, but the request falls outside Valve’s standard refund rule and approval is not guaranteed. For a Steam Store game, the standard rule is to request the refund within 14 days of purchase and have played for less than two hours. If you exceed either limit, you can still submit a request for Valve to review.
What is Steam’s standard refund rule for games?
Valve’s published policy for games and software applications bought on the Steam Store sets two conditions: request a refund within 14 days of purchase, and have less than two hours of recorded playtime. Both conditions must be met for a request to fit the standard rule. Being within the 14-day window does not offset more than two hours of play, and low playtime does not offset a purchase older than 14 days.
Valve’s Steam Refunds page, last updated April 23, 2024, says: “even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look.” That means you may submit a request outside the standard limits; it does not mean Valve will approve it. How to request a refund after playing more than two hours
- Check the purchase date and Steam’s recorded playtime. Compare them with the standard limits: within 14 days and less than two hours.
- Open help.steampowered.com and submit a refund request for the game.
- If you are outside either limit, explain the circumstances plainly and accurately. Valve says it will review out-of-rule requests, but does not promise an exception for any particular reason.
What happens if Steam approves the request?
Valve says an approved refund is issued within a week of approval. The money goes to your Steam Wallet or, where supported, the original payment method. If the original method cannot receive the refund, Valve credits the Steam Wallet. This is the stated processing period after approval, not a deadline for Steam to decide the request.

Does the same rule apply to DLC, gifts, or other purchases?
No. Steam has separate terms for other purchase types, so the standard game rule should not be applied to them automatically.

Can local consumer rights affect a refund?
Valve notes that consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional refund rights when a game is faulty. The Steam Refunds page does not explain the rules for every jurisdiction, so check the consumer-protection rules that apply where you live if you believe those rights are relevant.
