It depends on the paper collection program. Sticky notes are usually accepted with mixed paper, but not always; high-grade office-paper programs may reject them. Check your workplace or local program’s rules rather than assuming the adhesive is harmless.
Are sticky notes recyclable with office paper?
Sometimes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “If your recycling program accepts mixed paper, sticky notes are usually recyclable — but not always.” Its guidance distinguishes mixed-paper collection from high-grade office-paper collection, so the answer depends on what grade your program collects and what its processor can handle.
EPA’s office-paper manual lists colored sticky notes among items generally unacceptable in high-grade office-paper programs. That manual dates to 1990, and the EPA FAQ and quality guidance are archived material; use them to understand why program rules differ, not as a replacement for your current local or workplace acceptance list.
Why the paper stream matters
Mixed paper
Some mills that process mixed paper can remove sticky-note adhesives. That capability does not mean every mixed-paper collection program accepts sticky notes: the local program’s specifications still decide what belongs in its bin.
High-grade office paper
High-grade office-paper streams use a more specific paper-quality standard. Sticky notes and their adhesive may make the collected material unacceptable even when another program would take them with mixed paper. Keep them out if your high-grade program’s instructions exclude them.
What to do with paper that has a sticky note attached
- Check the bin label or collection guide. Look for whether the stream is mixed paper or high-grade office paper, and whether sticky notes or self-stick labels are listed.
- Follow the local rule. If the instructions are unclear, ask your workplace recycling contact or local recycling program. Do not treat a general EPA answer as a guarantee for your service.
- Sort the paper accordingly. Put it in recycling only if that program accepts it; otherwise use the disposal route specified by your workplace or local service.
EPA identifies most tapes and glues, along with some adhesives such as those on sticky notes and self-stick labels, as potential contaminants in recovered paper. Excess contamination can lead a mill to discard a bale, which is why a program’s acceptance list matters even when adhesive can be removed by some processors.
Make office paper collection easier to get right
EPA recommends convenient desk-side collection and clearly labeled office bins, with paper captured before it reaches the trash. A bin can make sorting easier, but it cannot determine which materials the collection service accepts. Labels should reflect that service’s rules, especially if the office separates mixed paper from high-grade office paper.
Shredding also changes the material: EPA’s office guidance says it breaks down paper fiber and categorizes shredded office paper as low grade. If documents need to be destroyed, check with the recycler about its security and recycling arrangements rather than assuming shredded paper belongs in the same stream as intact office paper.
How significant is office paper recycling?
EPA’s 2018 figures say paper and paperboard represented 23 percent of U.S. municipal solid waste, and about 68 percent of the paper Americans used was recycled. EPA also estimated that 3.97 million U.S. tons of office-type paper were generated that year, while noting that individual office-paper recovery data are limited. These are dated national figures, not current recycling rates for a particular city or workplace.
