Often, yes—but only if the camera still operates and sends a live HDMI image in the recording mode you need. A compatible external monitor can show that image, but it does not repair the camera’s controls or guarantee that recording can be started and managed with a failed LCD. Check the manual for your exact model and test the complete setup before relying on it.
What an external monitor can—and cannot—do
An external field monitor displays a video signal sent by the camera. It can replace the LCD as a way to view framing and focus if the camera can still output live video. A monitor is not automatically a recorder: viewing the signal does not by itself save footage.
An external display also cannot restore a camera that will not power on, cannot be operated, or cannot output HDMI. A broken LCD may affect more than viewing; menus, touch controls, recording controls, or other parts of the workflow may be inaccessible. HDMI support alone does not establish that a particular camera can be started or used with its LCD blank or disconnected.
Choose where the video will be recorded
First decide whether you want the camera to save footage to its own card or want an external recorder to capture the HDMI signal. These are different workflows, and the camera must support the mode you plan to use.

| Workflow | Where footage is saved | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| External monitor with internal recording | Camera memory card, if the camera supports recording while outputting HDMI. | Confirm live HDMI output during recording, card-recording settings, output format, and whether the camera remains operable without its LCD. |
| External recorder | The recorder’s media, if the recorder receives a compatible signal and recording is started. | Confirm format support, media, power, record-trigger behavior, and that the recorder actually begins capturing. A monitor alone does not record. |
For example, Sony’s α7 IV (ILCE-7M4) guide describes a “Rec. Media dur HDMI Output” option that can record movies to the camera’s memory card while outputting them over HDMI. Its HDMI-only behavior instead outputs movies to connected HDMI devices without recording them to the camera card. These are α7 IV settings, not universal menu names. See Sony’s α7 IV HDMI output settings guide.
Panasonic says its cited LUMIX S workflow can record while outputting camera images to an HDMI-connected external monitor or recorder. The manufacturer specifies a High Speed Type A-to-Type A HDMI cable for the connection described on that support page. See Panasonic’s LUMIX S external-device instructions.

Check compatibility before depending on the setup
- Find the exact camera model and movie-output instructions. Look for its HDMI output section and confirm that it sends a live image while recording, not only during playback. Check the mode, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use.
- Confirm that the camera can still be operated. Determine whether you can power it on, set it up, start recording, and control the needed functions with the LCD blank or disconnected. Do not infer this from HDMI support.
- Match the connector, cable, and display. Use the camera-side connector and cable type specified for your model and output mode. For example, Sony’s α7 IV guide calls for a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 4K output, while Panasonic’s cited LUMIX S instructions specify a High Speed Type A-to-Type A cable. Check the relevant manual rather than assuming every camera uses the same connector or cable requirement.
- Choose the recording destination and verify its settings. If you need an internal card copy, enable the camera’s simultaneous card-and-HDMI behavior where required. If using a recorder, confirm its supported signal, media, power, and record controls; then verify that it is capturing.
- Check what appears on the external display. Menus, status information, or focus and exposure aids may appear in the HDMI image. Look for a clean-output option if you need an unobstructed view. Panasonic documents display information being sent over HDMI on the DMC-G85 and explains how to remove it in its DMC-G85 HDMI display-information instructions.
- Test the full workflow before an important shoot. Use nonessential footage to check framing, focus, sound, the recording destination, and playback. Confirm that both the camera and any external recorder actually captured the clip.
Why the exact model and recording mode matter
HDMI behavior can change with the mode
Output restrictions may depend on recording settings. Sony’s α7 IV guide says that slow-motion/quick-motion shooting locks the HDMI media setting to internal recording. A mode that works for ordinary movie recording may therefore behave differently from the one you plan to use.
A damaged-screen workaround is not the same as closing a working LCD
Older Sony FDR-AX100/HDR-CX900 guidance illustrates why model-specific checks matter. Its guide says that closing the LCD while recording stops recording when the viewfinder is retracted. It also says that in XAVC S 4K recording, the movie image cannot be output to an external monitor over HDMI or video; only the on-screen display is output. Those cautions apply to the cited models and modes, not to every camera. See Sony’s FDR-AX100/HDR-CX900 recording guide.

If the external display stays blank
- Confirm the camera is powered on and set to a movie mode that supports live HDMI output.
- Check the camera’s HDMI output settings and, if using a recorder, distinguish internal-card recording from HDMI-only output.
- Verify that the cable and external display accept the selected resolution and frame rate, and that the cable is connected to the correct port.
- Check the manual for restrictions tied to the selected recording mode, including whether movie output is disabled or limited.
- If the camera cannot be operated or cannot send HDMI output, an external monitor will not resolve the underlying fault; manufacturer-authorized diagnosis or LCD repair may be needed.
Before buying a monitor or cable
Confirm the camera’s output connector, cable requirements, supported resolution and frame rate, and live-output behavior in the mode you need. Also establish that the camera remains usable with its LCD fault. The camera examples above demonstrate possible workflows, not compatibility with any particular monitor model.
