Yes. On supported Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer setups, you can configure the remote to control a TV, receiver, or soundbar’s volume, power, and input. The Google TV Streamer Voice Remote also has a customizable button for selected shortcuts. These are limited, documented functions—not unrestricted remapping of every button.
Which Google TV remote functions can you set up?
Google documents volume, power, and input controls for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer remotes. During setup, you choose the device and test each function. Some device models may not support some controls, so compatibility depends on the target device and the function you need.
The Google TV Streamer Voice Remote has an additional customizable button. Its documented shortcuts can open Google Home, launch a favorite TV app, or display and switch device inputs. Google’s documentation does not establish that every physical button can be assigned arbitrary commands.
How to set up volume, power, or input controls
- On the streaming device, open All settings → Remotes & Accessories → Set up remote buttons. Add the target device if it is not already listed, then choose the control you want to configure: volume, power, or input. Follow the on-screen prompts and point the remote at the device during setup. Google’s setup instructions note that some models may not work with particular controls.
- For volume, select the device that plays sound, make sure its sound is on, and test volume up and down when prompted.
- For power, select the device and use the remote to turn it off. Wait eight seconds, then turn it back on and confirm whether the test worked.
- For input, press the input button to cycle through the TV’s inputs. If the test succeeds, return to the HDMI input used by the Google streaming device.
How to configure the Google TV Streamer remote’s customizable button
These shortcut instructions apply to the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, not to every Google TV remote. Google’s instructions let you assign Google Home, a listed app, or device inputs.

- Press the customizable button and choose Google Home, an available app, or device inputs.
- To edit the shortcut later, press and hold the button for one to two seconds, then choose a shortcut type.
Why power or volume may not work
If the remote can navigate the streaming interface but cannot control the TV’s power or volume, Google says the problem is probably related to infrared (IR) signaling. The remote may be unable to send an IR signal to the device’s sensor. Point the remote at the target device and confirm that the correct device is selected under Settings → Remotes & Accessories → Set up remote buttons; then reconfigure the affected volume, power, or input control. Google does not publish a complete brand-by-brand or model-by-model compatibility matrix in the cited setup guidance. It has you select the device type and brand, then test the function; its instructions also warn that some models will not respond. Test your own device rather than assuming a particular TV, receiver, or soundbar is compatible.
