Usually, no. A regular external USB hard drive or SSD can store Xbox Series X|S-optimized games, but you generally need to move those games to the console’s internal storage or a compatible Storage Expansion Card to play them. Xbox One and earlier games are the main exception: they can run directly from USB storage.
Can you play Xbox Series X|S games from a USB drive?
For most games optimized for Xbox Series X|S, an ordinary USB drive is for storage, not launching. Keep an optimized game on USB to free space, then move it to the console’s internal storage or a compatible Storage Expansion Card when you want to play. Seagate’s Xbox Series X|S external-drive guidance distinguishes USB storage from locations that can play optimized games.
That distinction matters: a game being installed on a drive does not mean the console can run it from that drive. Xbox Wire’s Xbox Series X|S technology glossary describes the Seagate Storage Expansion Card as a dedicated storage solution for the consoles, separate from a standard USB drive.
Which Xbox games can run directly from USB?
Xbox One and earlier backward-compatible games
Xbox One and earlier titles can be played from an external USB 3.2 drive, according to Xbox Wire. In the Xbox Wire podcast with Jason Ronald, Xbox’s director of program management, Ronald said players can run Xbox One and earlier games directly from an external USB 3 drive. He also pointed to internal storage or the Storage Expansion Card for improved loading times.

Xbox Series X|S-optimized games
Plan to move these games from a regular USB drive to the console’s internal storage or a compatible Storage Expansion Card before playing. Informal claims about individual optimized-game exceptions are inconsistent, and the cited official guidance does not provide a verified current list of titles that launch from ordinary USB. If an exception is important for a particular game, check its current requirements rather than assuming it will run from USB.

The key choice is whether you need extra room to keep games installed or extra space from which to launch optimized games. A regular USB drive can help with the first; the Storage Expansion Card is the dedicated external option for the second.

How to use a USB drive for an optimized game
- Keep the optimized game on the external USB drive when you are not playing it.
- When you want to play, move it to the Xbox’s internal storage or a compatible Storage Expansion Card using the console’s game-storage controls.
- Launch the game from that storage location.
The cited sources do not establish the current minimum USB capacity or formatting requirements, so check Xbox’s current device prompts and support guidance for setup details. They also do not verify a complete list of optimized games that might be exceptions to the general USB-play rule.
