Why original PS3 games do not run on PS4
The PS4 does not have backward compatibility for PS3 games. Sony’s PlayStation 4 FAQ says: “No, the PS4 system does not feature backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, or PSone games.” That means inserting an original PS3 disc or trying to use an original PS3 download on PS4 will not make it playable as PS3 software.
Ways to play a PS3 game when you have a PS4
Stream it with PlayStation Plus Premium
Sony offers selected original PS3 games for cloud streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium in select markets. The exact title, your region, and an active Premium membership all matter. Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide describes the service, while its catalog instructions explain how to find and stream eligible games on PS4.
Before subscribing, search the current PlayStation Plus catalog for the exact game in your own region. Availability can change, and not every PS3 title is included. Streaming also means the game runs through the service; it is not a local installation of the original PS3 version.

Sony’s PS4 catalog access guide lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Sony notes that resolution depends on the title and connection, so these figures are service guidance rather than a guarantee of a particular stream quality.
Download a PS4 remaster or remake
Some games that first appeared on PS3 have separate remastered or remake editions for PS4. When a PS4 edition is available, you can download and play that version as PS4 software. It is not the original PS3 version, and owning the PS3 disc does not make that disc usable in a PS4.

Sony distinguishes downloadable remastered or remake editions from original PS3 games, which fall under streaming where available. Check the specific title and edition in the PlayStation Store or catalog before buying or subscribing.
Other options beyond the PS4
Play the original on a PS3
If you want to use an original PS3-format disc or software, a PS3 console is the direct hardware option. Sony’s PS3 user guide describes the console as designed to play PS3-format software. For a used or refurbished console, verify its condition and any relevant regional details with the seller.

Use RPCS3 on a desktop computer
RPCS3 is a free, open-source PS3 emulator and debugger for Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD desktop computers. It is not available as a PS4 application and does not turn a PS4 into a PS3.
Compatibility varies by game. Check the project’s compatibility list for the title you want; its status information changes over time. The project’s platform support and game-specific list do not establish that every PS3 game will work on every PC.

Which option should you choose?

The right route depends first on whether you need the original PS3 version or would accept a PS4 remaster. If you want to stay on PS4 and stream, verify the specific game and regional catalog before paying for Premium. If local play of the original version is the priority, a PS3 is the direct console route; RPCS3 is a separate PC option whose game compatibility must be checked title by title.
