Usually, no. A PlayStation console without a compatible disc drive cannot read physical game discs. Some newer PS5 Digital Edition models and PS5 Pro can use Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1 disc drive, but the original PS5 Digital Edition model group CFI-1000 cannot. Check your console’s exact model group before buying an accessory.
Can a digital-only PlayStation play physical games?
Only if the console has a compatible disc drive. A physical game disc is read by the drive, while a digital game is accessed through a download and digital license. Without a built-in or compatible add-on drive, a digital-only console cannot use the physical copy.
Sony states that the PS5 Digital Edition console in the CFI-1000 model group “doesn’t support disc-based games or media.” That model cannot be made compatible with the detachable drive described below. PlayStation Support: playing video and music from discs and USB drives.
Which PS5 Digital Edition models can use a disc drive?
Sony sells the detachable CFI-ZDD1 drive for selected newer PS5 Digital Edition models and PS5 Pro. Its US product listing specifies CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition model groups, as well as PS5 Pro. Sony’s setup support page describes compatibility with CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. Since the labels are not identical, do not rely on “Digital Edition” alone: check the console’s CFI model number and the current official compatibility information for your region before purchasing.

Sony’s official CFI-ZDD1 disc drive listing gives product and compatibility details; the PS5 disc drive setup instructions provide its attachment process. The drive requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup.
How to check your model and attach the detachable drive
- Find the CFI model number. Check the console’s label or packaging and identify its model group; do not assume compatibility from the console’s name alone.
- Compare it with Sony’s current regional guidance. Check both Sony’s product information and setup support for your market, especially if the model-group labels appear different.
- Buy the CFI-ZDD1 only if your model is listed as compatible. The drive is not a universal add-on for every PS5 Digital Edition.
- Follow Sony’s attachment instructions. Connect the drive as shown in Sony’s setup guide and connect to the internet so the drive can pair with the console.
Can you play PS4 or PS3 discs on a digital PS5?
A PS4 disc still needs a disc drive. Sony says PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. On a PS5 with a built-in drive, or a compatible PS5 using the detachable drive, supported PS4 disc games can be played; the disc must remain inserted while you play. PS5 consoles do not support PS3 game discs. Adding a disc drive does not make PS3 discs compatible.

Should you add a drive or choose a disc-equipped PS5?
- Already own a compatible newer digital PS5 or PS5 Pro: Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 drive is the physical-disc route, provided your exact model is supported.
- Own the CFI-1000 Digital Edition: Sony does not support discs on this model, so the detachable drive is not a solution. Use digital games or choose a console with a built-in drive if disc use is essential.
- Shopping for a console and expect to use discs: Choose a PS5 configuration with a built-in drive. Sony describes that configuration as supporting PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs; the all-digital configuration downloads games. See Sony’s PS5 console information.
