Yes. You can play Nintendo Switch Sports in local play without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. An active membership is required for online play; without one, Nintendo’s “Play Globally” option offers only a trial competition against computer competitors, not unrestricted online matchmaking.
What works without a membership?
Local play does not require Nintendo Switch Online. This lets you play locally rather than use the game’s online matchmaking. Nintendo’s official game page describes online features separately from local play.

Nintendo Support also says that choosing Play Globally without a membership starts a trial competition against computer competitors. That limited trial is not the same as full online play with other players. See the Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ.
When is Nintendo Switch Online required?
An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online. Nintendo Support states this directly in its game FAQ. Nintendo’s official game page also says that online features require both a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately, and a Nintendo Account.

These are separate requirements: a Nintendo Account does not replace the paid membership needed for online play. Buying the game also does not include or substitute for that membership.
Is LAN play the same as local or online play?
No. Nintendo documents LAN play as a separate setup using multiple consoles connected through a shared wired router. Its LAN play instructions describe the connection and equipment for each system, but do not explicitly state whether a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. Treat LAN as distinct from internet matchmaking, and check Nintendo’s current instructions for the setup you plan to use.

Does the Soccer Leg Strap affect the membership requirement?
No. Nintendo’s official game page identifies a Leg Strap requirement for some Soccer gameplay. That accessory detail does not change the distinction between membership-free local play and online play, which requires an active membership.
