You can play selected Nintendo 64 games on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 through the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app, but you need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The collection is a selection of Nintendo-provided game reproductions, not a way to run original N64 cartridges.
What you need to play N64 games on Switch
- A Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The base Nintendo Switch Online tier does not include the N64 collection.
- The Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app, downloaded from the console’s Nintendo Switch Online area.
Nintendo describes the library as selected games, with more titles on the way; it is not the complete N64 catalog. Its current listing includes titles such as Mario Kart 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, Paper Mario, Super Mario 64, Dr. Mario 64, Yoshi’s Story, GoldenEye 007 and Sin & Punishment. Check Nintendo’s current N64 – Nintendo Classics listing for the latest roster and details. Nintendo cautions that game performance and presentation may differ from the original versions. Nintendo’s listing also gives the app’s file size as 1.9 GB for both Switch and Switch 2, but notes that storage needs increase as games are added.
Which membership includes the N64 collection?
You need Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. On Nintendo’s US membership page, the displayed annual prices are $49.99 for an individual membership and $79.99 for a family membership covering up to eight Nintendo Accounts. Prices, terms and availability vary by region and can change; confirm the offer on Nintendo’s local Nintendo Switch Online page. Memberships auto-renew after the initial term at the then-current price unless canceled.

How to start playing
- Subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack using the Nintendo Account that will access the collection.
- Open the Nintendo Switch Online area on the console, find Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics, and download the app.
- Launch the app and choose a game from the available library.
Switch Lite can use the collection, but it is a handheld-only system. Nintendo’s support information explains how to pair the N64 controller wirelessly with Switch Lite; check Nintendo Support’s controller instructions for pairing details.
Do you need an N64 controller?
No. Nintendo lists Joy-Con, Joy-Con 2, Switch Pro Controller, Switch 2 Pro Controller and the Nintendo 64 Controller as supported options for the collection. The N64-style controller is optional; Nintendo states, “This controller is optional and not required to play the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics collection of games.” It is designed for that collection, and Nintendo does not guarantee that all of its options and features will work in other software. What Switch 2 adds
Nintendo identifies the N64 collection as supported on Switch 2, with game behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch according to its compatibility notice. The software listing names CRT filter and rewind as features exclusive to Switch 2. Consult Nintendo’s software page for current compatibility and feature details.
