Yes—if the disc is eligible and you successfully claim Xbox’s disc-to-digital license. After that, you can launch the digital version without putting the disc in the drive, but you must keep the qualifying disc: Microsoft makes the license conditional on continued possession and may require revalidation.
What changes when you claim a digital license?
An ordinary disc installation does not convert the game into a disc-free license. The console may install or download the game’s data, but the disc still needs to be in the drive to play. A disc-to-digital claim is different: for an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc, a successful claim grants a separate, limited digital license. Xbox explains the feature and eligibility; its backward-compatibility guidance describes the disc requirement for ordinary disc-based play.
Microsoft’s Usage rules for Digital Goods say the limited license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. It cannot be transferred separately from the disc. If you no longer have the disc, access to the associated license may be suspended or revoked; Microsoft may also require you to revalidate eligibility.
How to claim the license
- Use a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with an optical disc drive. Sign in to your account.
- Insert the physical Xbox One or Series X game disc and launch the game.
- If the title qualifies, follow the on-screen prompt to accept the digital license. If no eligibility prompt appears, the disc may not qualify.
- After a successful claim, find and launch the digital game from your Xbox library on supported devices. Features such as Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming apply only to games that support them.
Xbox Wire’s August 26, 2026 announcement, “Your Discs. Now Also Digital.”, says players claim the entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game. The console prompt is the practical way to check a particular copy: eligibility is not universal and can vary with technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors. Microsoft says availability may change.

Which consoles and discs qualify?
- Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs: Supported discs may qualify, but not every title does.
- Xbox Series S: It is digital-only and cannot read a disc, so it cannot perform the claim directly.
- Xbox Series X: Some Series X consoles are digital-only. You need a version with an optical drive to claim a physical disc.
- Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs: These are not identified as supported by the disc-to-digital feature. For backward-compatible disc games, Xbox says the disc must remain in the drive to play after installation.
If you own only a console without a disc drive, you would need access to a supported drive-equipped console to attempt a claim. A successful claim makes the game available in your library on supported devices, but does not remove the retained-disc condition.
Disc installation versus a digital claim
| Situation | Can you play without the disc inserted? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary installation from an Xbox One or backward-compatible game disc | No | The game installs or downloads, but the disc remains necessary for play. Xbox backward-compatibility guidance. |
| Successful disc-to-digital claim for an eligible Xbox One or Series X disc | Yes, after the claim | The digital license is limited and conditional on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft usage rules. |
| Xbox 360 or original Xbox backward-compatible disc | No | The current feature does not identify these as supported; the disc is still needed after installation. Xbox guidance. |
Can you sell or give away the disc?
Do not assume you can. The digital license is tied to continued possession of the qualifying disc, not a replacement ownership right detached from it. Selling, lending permanently, or giving away the disc could leave you without assured access to the claimed digital version.
