Yes. You can keep using an address at your own domain without operating a mail server. A hosted email provider can manage both incoming and outgoing mail, while an email-routing service can forward incoming messages to an inbox you already use. The key difference: forwarding alone does not let you reply from your custom address.

Choose between forwarding and a hosted mailbox

Both options let you use an address at your domain without managing server software, but they do different jobs.

Option What it does Best fit Important limitation
Email forwarding Routes incoming messages sent to your domain to an existing mailbox. Cloudflare describes its Email Routing service as free forwarding for custom addresses. Cloudflare’s routing guide You only need to receive mail at the custom address. Forwarding by itself does not provide a custom-domain sending identity. Replies generally come from the destination mailbox address. Cloudflare’s Postmaster documentation
Hosted custom-domain email A provider hosts a mailbox and supports sending and receiving as an address on your domain. You want a complete mailbox and to send and reply as your custom address. You must configure the provider’s DNS records and check that its current plan meets your requirements. Proton’s custom-domain guide
Self-hosted mail server You operate the mail-server infrastructure and configuration yourself. You specifically want to control and maintain the mail server. It is not required just to keep a custom-domain email address.

When forwarding is enough

Forwarding is a receive-only arrangement: the routing service accepts mail addressed to your domain and sends it on to a verified destination, such as an existing personal inbox. Cloudflare’s setup requires using Cloudflare DNS and configures the records needed for routing. Its onboarding guide says DNS changes may take up to 24 hours to propagate globally, though it typically sees 5–15 minutes for domains using Cloudflare DNS.

The limitation matters when you reply. Cloudflare says replies to forwarded messages are sent from the destination address, not the custom address used in the forwarding rule. Cloudflare’s Postmaster documentation also describes Sender Rewriting Scheme (SRS), which can help forwarded mail pass sender-authentication checks; it does not turn forwarding into a hosted mailbox or give you a custom-domain sending identity.

When to choose hosted email

Choose a hosted custom-domain mailbox if you need to send and receive as, for example, you@yourdomain.com. The provider runs the mail infrastructure; you retain control of your domain and connect it to the service with DNS settings. Proton documents this setup for sending and receiving with a custom domain in its custom-domain guide.

Before choosing a provider, compare the features that affect your use rather than assuming all hosted plans are alike:

  • How many domains and addresses the plan supports.
  • Mailbox access, storage, and any privacy or encryption features you need.
  • Setup and migration requirements.
  • Current price and plan terms.

Those details vary by provider and plan, so check the provider’s current documentation and plan page. A forwarding service and a hosted mailbox should not be compared as interchangeable products: one routes incoming messages, while the other can support a full send-and-receive setup.

What DNS setup involves

DNS records tell other mail systems where to deliver messages and help receiving systems check whether outgoing messages are authorized. The provider supplies the exact values; use its current instructions rather than copying generic record values.

  • MX records direct incoming email for your domain to the mail service.
  • SPF identifies systems permitted to send mail for the domain.
  • DKIM lets the provider attach a cryptographic signature that recipients can check.
  • DMARC sets a policy for handling mail that fails authentication checks and can enable aggregate reports.

Cloudflare’s email-authentication documentation explains these mechanisms. If your domain already has an SPF record, do not add a second one: Cloudflare says SPF has a limit of 10 DNS lookups and advises merging existing SPF entries. Your provider’s instructions should account for existing records and the service you select.

What happens if you change providers?

Your address is tied to the domain, not permanently to one mail host. If you switch services, the domain’s email routing and authentication records need to be updated for the new provider. Cloudflare’s DNS record documentation covers adding and removing records; follow the incoming and outgoing mail instructions from the provider you are moving to.

Getting the records right supports authentication, but it cannot guarantee that every message will reach a recipient’s inbox. Forwarding can also interact with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC checks, so use a forwarding service that documents how it handles forwarded mail.
