A studio leaving Xbox does not, by itself, determine whether a particular game stays available. Xbox says Game Pass access ends when the subscription ends or the game leaves the library.
What determines whether you can keep playing?
Game Pass provides access to a changing library; it is not ownership of every included game. Xbox’s Game Pass page says subscribers can access library games until the subscription is canceled or expires, or a game leaves the library.
So the key question is the individual game’s catalog status—not whether its developer or publisher has changed corporate or platform relationships. A studio might close, be sold, reorganized, or change publishing arrangements, but those events alone do not establish that its game has been removed from Game Pass. If the game remains included in your plan, your subscription is active, and the game is otherwise available to you, you can continue playing through Game Pass.
How to check a specific game
- Search for the exact title in the Game Pass app or the current Xbox catalog. Check that it is included in your subscription plan.
- Look for a departure announcement. Check Xbox’s current “leaving soon” listings and Xbox Wire posts. Xbox has also described announcements through the Xbox app, the console’s Game Pass section, and mobile notifications. Its notice-channel and timing guidance appeared in a 2020 Xbox Wire article; the article said subscribers would receive a couple of weeks’ notice, but that historical statement is not a guarantee of today’s notice period.
- Check the game’s Xbox Store page if you may want to buy it. Confirm that the edition and platform you want are still available for purchase, and review the current price and terms.
What happens when a game leaves Game Pass?
Once Xbox removes a title from the Game Pass library, your subscription no longer provides access to it. To keep playing, you would need to buy it separately, if it is still available for purchase. Xbox Wire has advised subscribers to buy departing games before removal; for example, a December 2024 post mentioned a 20% membership discount for the specified titles in that announcement. That example does not guarantee the same discount, eligibility, or offer for other games today, so check the current listing.

A separate purchase applies to the edition and platform purchased and remains subject to the store’s current availability and terms. It is different from Game Pass access: buying one version does not mean every version or platform is included.
Game Pass removal is not the same as an Xbox Store removal
A game can leave the Game Pass catalog without necessarily leaving the Xbox Store. These are separate events in Xbox announcements. If you are considering a purchase, verify both that the title is still sold in the store and that the specific edition you want matches your platform.
