If a developer ends a Steam Playtest by setting it to Not Playable, Steam stops launching the Playtest app, but that alone does not automatically revoke access already granted to you. If the developer makes the Playtest available again, previous participants retain access. A separate reset removes participants and disables Playtest keys.
What happens when a Steam Playtest ends?
A Steam Playtest is a separate app associated with the main game, with its own access controls. When the developer deactivates it by setting its status to Not Playable, Steam will not launch the Playtest app. That status change does not, by itself, revoke a Playtest key that was already granted.
There is no universal end date or fixed duration for Steam Playtests. Developers decide when to deactivate or reopen their tests, so a particular game’s availability depends on the developer’s choices.
Can you play again if the developer reopens the test?
Yes, if you had already been granted access. A developer can make the Playtest visible again, and players who already had access keep it; they do not need to sign up or be admitted again. Steam’s Steam Playtest documentation states: “Players that already had been granted access will still have access and do not need to signup or be granted access again.”

This applies to access retained through the Playtest entitlement or a Playtest key, unless the developer separately takes an action that changes that access.
How is a reset different from ending the Playtest?
Setting a Playtest to Not Playable and resetting it are different actions. A reset is a more consequential operation: Steam says it removes participants and waiting players, disables all Playtest keys—including unused keys—and archives pending friend invites. Steam describes the reset as irreversible.

So, if the developer only deactivates the app, prior access is not automatically revoked. If the developer resets the Playtest, participants and key holders should not expect their prior access to carry over.

Steam Playtest keys are part of the Playtest’s own access system, and resetting that Playtest disables those keys. Do not confuse them with release override keys used to test the main game: Steam documents those separately, including a Valve tool that can ban those keys. See Testing On Steam for the distinction.

- Open the game’s Steam store page and look for its Playtest availability or signup information.
- Check the developer’s announcements for a notice that the test has ended, reopened, or changed access.
- If the Playtest remains unavailable, the Steamworks rules alone cannot establish that game’s current status; the developer controls its settings, which can change over time.
