It depends on how the game is free. A free-to-play PS4 game is generally yours to play without PS Plus, including online. A PS Plus monthly game is different: you can play it only while your account has an active subscription. Downloading it does not make it permanently yours.
First, identify how you got the game
“Free” can describe different kinds of access on PlayStation, and each has different rules. The key distinction is whether the game is free-to-play, a monthly PS Plus benefit, part of a subscription catalog, or a purchase.
| How you got the game | Can you keep playing without PS Plus? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Free-to-play game | Generally yes, including online play. | Examples include Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone. Check the individual PlayStation Store listing because requirements can vary. PlayStation’s US PS Plus FAQ and the PS Plus usage guide describe the distinction. |
| PS Plus monthly game | No. An active membership is required. | You must claim the game during its offer window. Access is suspended when membership ends and resumes if you regain an active membership, provided the game remains available and service terms permit it. PlayStation’s US PS Plus FAQ |
| PS Plus Game Catalog or Classics Catalog game | Only while you have eligible subscription access and the game remains in the catalog. | Catalog titles can leave the service, ending subscription access. Availability can vary by country, tier, and platform. PlayStation’s US PS Plus FAQ and PlayStation’s Ireland cancellation support page |
| Purchased game | Usually yes for the game itself; online multiplayer may still require PS Plus. | Most paid games require membership for online multiplayer, but some do not. Check the game’s Store listing. PlayStation’s US PS Plus FAQ and the PS Plus usage guide |
Do free PS4 games need PS Plus for online play?
Usually not if the game is specifically classified as free-to-play. PlayStation lists Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples that do not generally require a membership, including for online play. That exception does not extend automatically to every game that costs nothing to download: a monthly PS Plus game is still a subscription benefit, and paid games may require PS Plus for multiplayer.
Before downloading, open the game’s listing in the local PlayStation Store and check its online-play and membership details. PlayStation notes that availability and features can vary by country or region, subscription tier, platform, and device.

What happens to a monthly game when you cancel PS Plus?
Canceling renewal does not immediately remove benefits if you have paid time remaining. PlayStation says your benefits continue until the end of the already purchased subscription period. After that period expires, monthly games and other membership benefits, including online multiplayer access where required, stop.
A monthly game you claimed is not converted into a permanently owned copy just because you downloaded it. It becomes unavailable when the active subscription ends. If you later have an active membership again, access may return, subject to the game still being available and the applicable service terms.

How to tell which rule applies to your game
- Check where the game came from. If its Store page identifies it as free-to-play, it is generally separate from PS Plus monthly and catalog games.
- Check whether you claimed it as a monthly game. Monthly titles must be added to your library during the offer window and require an active membership to play.
- Check whether it is a catalog title. Catalog access depends on an eligible membership and whether the game remains in the catalog.
- Separate access to the game from access to multiplayer. A purchased game can remain playable while its online multiplayer still requires PS Plus; some games are exceptions.
- Verify the local listing and membership details. Rules and availability can differ by region, tier, game, and platform.
The short version
You can generally keep playing a free-to-play PS4 game without PS Plus, even online. You cannot keep playing a PS Plus monthly game after your membership expires unless you regain active subscription access. A catalog game is available only while it remains in the service, and owning a paid game does not necessarily include online multiplayer without PS Plus.
