The launch example was a video of geese taking flight over Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge in California; visitors could turn on the geese calls using an audio icon, with sound off by default. The announcement establishes that this feature launched in 2015, but not whether it is available today.
How Bing homepage audio worked at launch
In its June 25, 2015 announcement, the Bing Team said visitors could look for an audio icon at the bottom-right of the homepage and choose whether to listen. Audio did not play automatically: sound was off by default. Microsoft also pointed to a camera icon for information about the daily image and the geese calls, which it credited to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Microsoft’s announcement described the control and launch example.
BetaNews reported on the same day that the control appeared at the bottom right and that users could switch the sound on and off. That was a contemporary account of the launch-day feature, not evidence of how Bing behaves now. BetaNews’ June 25, 2015 coverage records that report.
Why Microsoft added sound
The Bing Team presented audio as another way to enrich the homepage’s daily imagery. It said users had asked to hear sounds that fit evocative scenes, including rushing waterfalls, animal calls, and waves along a distant shore. The geese video gave visitors a specific example of that idea: a visual scene paired with its calls, with listening left to the user.

Where audio fit in Bing’s homepage history
Microsoft described the audio announcement as part of a sequence of media features. The Bing Team said it released its first HTML5 video homepage in 2011 and introduced an interactive panoramic homepage the following year. The 2015 audio option extended that emphasis on making the daily homepage image more immersive and informative, rather than replacing the search page’s core purpose.
Is Bing homepage audio still available?
The sources documenting the launch do not establish whether the audio control remains available today, or whether availability varied by region, browser, or device. The accurate answer is that Bing homepage audio was announced as an optional feature on June 25, 2015; the launch reports do not confirm its present status. A historical description of the icon or its behavior should not be treated as a current how-to.
