Yes, especially if you add a lot of fiber quickly. A sudden increase can cause gas, bloating, or abdominal cramps. Protein is less straightforward: U.S. nutrition authorities have not set an upper intake limit, and evidence about very high intakes over long periods is limited. The sensible approach is to increase fiber gradually, get it from varied foods, and tailor protein and fluid choices to your health and activity.
What can happen if you eat too much fiber?
A large amount of fiber in a short time can cause intestinal gas, bloating, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms may ease as gut bacteria adapt, and increasing fiber little by little can reduce the chance of gas or diarrhea. MedlinePlus explains these effects in its fiber guidance.
Very high fiber intake may also interfere with absorption of iron, zinc, magnesium, and calcium. MedlinePlus notes this is usually not a major concern because many high-fiber foods also contain minerals.
How much fiber should adults aim for?
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) gives a general adult range of 22–34 grams per day, depending on age and sex. Its constipation guidance page was last reviewed in May 2018. This is a general target, not a universal threshold at which symptoms begin or a maximum safe amount. See NIDDK’s fiber and nutrition guidance.

How to increase fiber without as much discomfort
- Add it gradually. Make small changes rather than suddenly loading meals with high-fiber foods. This gives your digestive system time to adapt.
- Choose a variety of foods. Whole grains, beans and other legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds provide fiber. NIH News in Health describes these foods as useful sources; evidence for isolated added fibers is unclear or inconsistent for some health outcomes, so a supplement is not automatically necessary.
- Drink fluids suited to your needs. Fluids help fiber work, but there is no single water quota that fits everyone. NIDDK says needs vary with body size, health, activity level, and location. Ask a clinician for guidance if you have a fluid restriction or a condition that affects how much you should drink.
Can too much protein harm you?
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) says the Food and Nutrition Board has not established a tolerable upper intake level for protein. ODS reports that the risk of adverse effects from excess protein from food is very low, while cautioning that data on possible effects of high intakes from food and supplements are limited. That means there is no established universal protein toxicity threshold—but the absence of a defined limit is not proof that any amount is safe for everyone indefinitely.
ODS summarizes studies in which high-protein diets providing two to three times the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) did not appear, over several months, to increase kidney-stone or dehydration risk, compromise kidney function, reduce bone health, or change several measured blood or kidney-function markers. The RDA cited is 0.8 g/kg/day for healthy adults and 0.85 g/kg/day for adolescents. These findings are limited to the intakes, outcomes, and duration studied; they do not establish long-term safety for every very high intake or for people with existing health conditions. Details are in the ODS exercise and athletic performance fact sheet.

MedlinePlus lists possible concerns when protein intake exceeds need, including protein being used for energy or stored as body fat, possible dehydration, calcium loss, kidney burden, and displacement of carbohydrates. These are potential, context-dependent effects, not inevitable outcomes for every person. ODS’s evidence summary is more qualified, particularly about what studies over several months can establish.
Do athletes need more protein?
MedlinePlus gives a range of about 1.2–2.0 g/kg/day for athletes. It is athlete-specific guidance, not a universal target for all adults. Protein alone does not build muscle: resistance exercise is needed for muscle growth, and eating more protein does not automatically improve performance. See MedlinePlus guidance on nutrition and athletic performance.

When to get individualized advice
Talk with a clinician or registered dietitian if you have persistent or severe digestive symptoms, kidney disease or another relevant medical condition, a prescribed diet, or a restriction on fluids. They can help tailor protein, fiber, and fluid guidance to your circumstances; general nutrition guidance cannot diagnose the cause of symptoms.
