Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSometimes, but a project failing or a marketplace shutting down does not automatically entitle you to a refund. Your options depend on what the seller promised, whether the NFT or associated content was delivered as agreed, the marketplace’s terms, how you paid, and which country’s law applies. Start by preserving evidence and checking deadlines; then pursue the seller, marketplace, and payment provider through the routes that fit your facts.
Which refund route fits your situation?
These routes can have different targets and requirements. A disappointing investment outcome is not the same as non-delivery, a contractual failure, an unauthorized payment, or fraud.
| Route | Who may provide a remedy | What matters | Timing and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketplace or seller policy | The seller or marketplace, depending on its terms | Whether the item was not received or not as described, whether the seller and NFT qualify, and the terms that applied to the transaction | Rules and deadlines vary. The FTC’s November 2024 marketplace guidance says some operators leave payments, refunds, delivery, and related issues to buyer and seller; others offer a claims process. |
| Consumer or contract law | Usually the seller or trader | The seller’s promises, what was supplied, the buyer’s status, the governing law, and whether the relevant content or service failed to conform to the agreement | Remedies are jurisdiction-specific. A project’s failure or a falling NFT price alone does not establish entitlement. |
| Card or other payment dispute | The card issuer or payment provider decides under the applicable rules | Payment method, evidence, reason for the dispute, and filing deadline | Eligibility is conditional. A card or bank-transfer dispute is not a guaranteed refund and generally is not a route to reverse an authorized cryptocurrency transfer. |
| Fraud report or reimbursement route | Relevant authorities or, for qualifying payment fraud, a payment provider | Evidence of suspected fraud and the payment route; a project’s collapse alone does not prove fraud | Rules differ by country. The FCA describes a UK reimbursement scheme for certain eligible authorised push payment fraud sent through Faster Payments or CHAPS on or after 7 October 2024. |
What to do first
- Save the records. Keep the transaction hash and receipt, the original listing and project description, the white paper or roadmap as it appeared when you bought, marketplace terms, messages, emails, and evidence of what was not delivered or stopped working. Retain copies of your communications. FTC guidance recommends keeping messages and checking claim deadlines.
- Write to the seller promptly. Identify the specific promise or term, explain what happened, state the remedy you want, and set a reasonable response date. Keep the message factual and save the reply or proof of delivery.
- Open the marketplace’s official support or dispute process. Ask whether this NFT, seller, and complaint qualify, what evidence is required, and the deadline. If the seller does not resolve the issue, FTC guidance advises reporting the seller to the marketplace.
- Contact your payment provider quickly. Ask whether a dispute is available for this transaction and what deadline and evidence apply. Describe accurately what happened: do not call a payment unauthorized if you approved it and are unhappy because the NFT lost value.
- Use the appropriate local complaint channel if you suspect fraud. Include transaction records and distinguish evidence of deception from a failed project or a market loss. If the marketplace has disappeared, its closure by itself neither proves fraud nor guarantees reimbursement.
Does the marketplace have to refund you?
There is no single refund policy for NFT marketplaces established by the sources cited here. The FTC’s general marketplace guidance says: “Some marketplace operators leave it completely up to the sellers and buyers to decide how to handle payments, returns, refunds, delivery, and other issues.” Other platforms may provide a process for goods not received or not as advertised, but eligibility can depend on the seller, item, and applicable terms.
Check the terms that applied when you purchased, rather than assuming the platform’s current policy governs the transaction. Look for coverage of digital assets, exclusions, proof requirements, and filing deadlines. If the platform still operates, use its official support channel and ask for a written decision. A platform’s closure can make a claim harder to pursue, but it does not by itself decide whether the seller breached an agreement or whether another remedy is available.

When might consumer law or a contract help?
The important question is not simply whether the project “failed,” but what the seller actually agreed to provide and whether that promise became part of the contract. A roadmap that was not met, an abandoned community, unavailable associated content, and an NFT whose market price fell are different circumstances. Relevant facts can include whether the token was delivered, what rights or content came with it, whether the seller acted as a trader, and which law governs the sale.
United Kingdom: digital-content rights
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides remedies where digital content does not conform to the contract, including repair or replacement and, in specified circumstances, a price reduction. It also provides a refund right for breach of the statutory right to supply, subject to the relevant section’s conditions. Where a consumer is entitled to a statutory refund, the Act says it must be paid without undue delay and within 14 days after the trader agrees that the consumer is entitled; it is paid using the original payment method unless the consumer expressly agrees otherwise.

Those provisions are not a blanket guarantee for an NFT project that disappoints or shuts down. Whether a particular NFT purchase involves covered digital content, a trader, and a relevant breach depends on the contract and facts. The statute is the Consumer Rights Act 2015, Part 1.
European Union: a limited MiCA withdrawal right
MiCA Article 13 gives retail holders a 14-calendar-day withdrawal period for covered crypto-assets other than asset-referenced tokens and e-money tokens when purchased directly from an offeror or from a service provider placing them on the offeror’s behalf. Reimbursement is ordinarily due within 14 days after the withdrawal notification. The rule excludes assets admitted to trading before purchase and does not allow withdrawal after the subscription period for a time-limited offer has ended.

Do not assume this applies to every NFT or every marketplace transaction. Whether the asset and purchase fall within MiCA’s scope must be determined first. MiCA is Regulation (EU) 2023/1114; Article 13 is part of the regulation’s rules for covered offers.
Can you dispute an NFT purchase with your card or bank?
Possibly, if the payment method and circumstances qualify under the provider’s rules. Ask the issuer or provider about the relevant deadline and evidence requirements as soon as possible. A dispute is a request for review, not a promise that the payment will be reversed.

United Kingdom: chargeback, section 75, and APP fraud
According to FCA guidance, a buyer who paid by card for something not received may ask the card provider about chargeback. For a credit-card purchase over £100 and under £30,000, section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 might apply; it does not apply to purchases under £100, although chargeback may still be available. These routes are conditional and may not fit a cryptocurrency purchase or a complaint that amounts only to a loss in market value.
The FCA also describes reimbursement rules for eligible authorised push payment fraud sent through the UK Faster Payments System or CHAPS on or after 7 October 2024, subject to conditions and possible exceptions. This is a fraud-specific route, not a general NFT-project refund. The FCA separately says direct investments in cryptoassets and NFTs are outside its regulatory oversight and are not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). That statement concerns UK financial-services protections; it does not decide every possible consumer, contract, or fraud claim.

United States: card disputes and cryptocurrency transfers
FTC guidance recommends using any applicable marketplace process and contacting the card issuer when a card dispute may be available. It warns that cryptocurrency payments are like sending cash and generally cannot be recovered once sent. That does not turn every lost NFT investment into fraud or make an authorized transfer eligible for a card-style chargeback.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a failed project is not automatically fraud
A project can fail, abandon its roadmap, or lose value without those facts alone proving that its creators committed fraud. Be precise about what you can document: the seller’s statements, the transaction, what was delivered, and what happened afterward. Report suspected fraud through official local channels, but do not describe an authorized purchase as unauthorized or treat a disappointing investment outcome as proof of deception.
For UK consumers, the FCA’s warning about cryptoasset risk, which includes NFTs in its discussion and was last updated on 6 February 2026, puts the investment risk plainly: “As a result, if you buy cryptoassets you should be prepared to lose all the money you invest.” That warning is about financial risk, not a decision on whether a particular seller breached a contract.
