Sometimes. For U.S. purchases, the answer depends on the store and on whether you downloaded or streamed the game, how long you played, and whether you changed your mind or received faulty content. As of October 30, 2026, PlayStation generally allows a request within 14 days only if downloading or streaming has not started; Steam’s standard rule is a request within 14 days and under two hours played; Nintendo’s U.S. policy generally treats digital purchases as final; and Microsoft offers an Xbox request route, but a universal Xbox time or playtime cutoff is not verified here. A request is not a guarantee of approval.
These are store policies, not a single industry-wide rule. They cover U.S. digital purchases; local consumer law and rules in other countries may differ.

What determines whether a digital game can be refunded?
Start with the store where you paid, not the console or device on which you play. Each company sets its own ordinary change-of-mind conditions, and the same purchase can be treated differently depending on its format and status. A game bought digitally from a console store is not covered by a retailer’s policy for boxed games.
Before making a request, identify these details:
- Store and region: Confirm the storefront and country tied to the purchase. U.S. policy wording should not be treated as a worldwide guarantee.
- Purchase date and release status: Check the transaction date and whether it was a pre-order or a released game. Pre-order rules can differ from ordinary purchases.
- Download, streaming, and play activity: Note whether a download or preload began, whether you streamed the game, and how much time you played. Different stores use different activity thresholds.
- What you bought: Determine whether the transaction was a full game, add-on, in-game item, bundle, gift, third-party key, or physical copy. Special terms may apply.
- Reason for the request: Separate a change of mind from a fault or other problem. The policies and any legal rights relevant to those situations may not be the same.
Keep the order confirmation or transaction details available. They help you identify the transaction and explain the issue, but having them does not itself establish eligibility.

Can I refund a PlayStation game after downloading it?
Usually not under PlayStation Store’s ordinary U.S. change-of-mind rule. Sony’s policy generally allows a request within 14 days of purchase only if downloading or streaming has not started; it makes an exception for faulty content.
The important cutoff is starting the download or stream—not how many hours you played. A game that has downloaded but has not been opened can therefore be in a different position from a Steam game with the same playtime. Sony’s policy says that games or add-ons whose download or streaming has started are not eligible unless they are faulty.
How do I submit the request?
- Open your PlayStation account’s Transaction History and locate the purchase.
- Select the eligible transaction and choose Request Refund if that option is available.
- If you cannot complete the request there, contact PlayStation Support and provide the transaction details and reason for contacting them.
For a technical fault, describe what is not working and when it occurs rather than framing the request only as a change of mind. The faulty-content exception is part of Sony’s policy, but it is not a promise that every complaint will be accepted.
Can I cancel a PlayStation pre-order?
Pre-orders have additional timing and download conditions. Sony distinguishes purchases made more than 14 days before release from those made 14 days or less before release, and eligibility also depends on whether the main content has been downloaded or preloaded. Automatic Downloads can start a preload, so a buyer who wants to preserve a cancellation option should check the console’s automatic-download settings and the order’s current status before release.

Can I refund a Steam game after playing it?
Steam’s standard refund offer is for requests made within two weeks of purchase while the game has been played for less than two hours. Valve says requests outside those conditions can still be reviewed, so missing the standard window does not mean a request cannot be submitted; it does mean the usual eligibility conditions are no longer met.
Steam’s standard rule is tied to playtime, unlike PlayStation’s ordinary cutoff tied to starting a download or stream. Installing a game by itself is not identified in Valve’s standard policy as the cutoff. If a game is faulty or the circumstances are unusual, explain the problem and submit a request rather than assuming the standard offer is the only possible review.
How do I request a Steam refund?
- Go to Steam Help and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Choose the relevant purchase from the help flow.
- Follow the refund-request prompts and explain the reason accurately.
Do Steam DLC, gifts, or keys use the same rule?
No. Downloadable content can have additional conditions, including time played in the underlying game and whether the add-on was consumed, modified, or transferred. In-game items, bundles, and gifts have distinct rules. Valve cannot refund game keys purchased outside Steam, so a key bought from another seller must be addressed with that seller.

Pre-release games need separate attention. For a playable pre-release title, the two-hour limit applies, while the 14-day period generally begins at release. An unplayable pre-purchase may be requested for a refund before release. Valve also describes exceptions related to beta testing, so do not assume every pre-release period is treated identically.

How do I refund an Xbox digital game?
Microsoft provides a route to request a refund for an Xbox digital game, but the official policy available for this article does not substantiate one universal time limit or playtime threshold. In particular, Steam’s two-hour rule should not be applied to an Xbox purchase.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used to buy the game.
- Open Microsoft’s Xbox refund-request route and select the purchase where the interface offers that option.
- Submit the request with a clear description of the issue and retain any confirmation or status information shown.
Microsoft’s support wording is that a customer who purchased a game or app “may be able to request a refund.” That describes an available process, not an entitlement to approval. Microsoft also distinguishes packaged games from digital game products, so make sure you are following the route for the format you actually purchased.
Can I refund a Nintendo eShop game?
In the United States, Nintendo generally treats payments for digital purchases—including pre-purchases—as final. Its policy does not promise a standard change-of-mind refund window. Nintendo may authorize an exception, and applicable law may require a remedy, but neither should be presented as an automatic refund.
If a game has a specific problem, contact Nintendo with the purchase details and a concise explanation. Describe whether the issue is a fault, an accidental purchase, or another circumstance; the policy’s exceptions are not guarantees that a particular request will be approved.

Do not generalize the U.S. rule to every country. Nintendo’s Australia and New Zealand guidance separately recognizes remedies under consumer guarantees. The rights available depend on the applicable jurisdiction and the facts of the purchase.

A change-of-mind rule does not erase consumer rights that apply to faulty goods or digital content. Sony expressly identifies faulty content as an exception to its ordinary download-and-stream restriction; Valve notes that additional faulty-game rights may exist in some jurisdictions; and Nintendo reserves refunds required by law. The result can depend on where you live, what failed, and which seller handled the purchase.
Keep the distinction between digital and physical purchases clear. A disc or cartridge bought from a retailer follows that seller’s return terms; it does not undo a separate digital sale. Sony and Microsoft distinguish boxed purchases from digital products, and Nintendo’s direct-store policy for qualifying physical purchases is different from its digital policy.

Nintendo of America’s direct-store policy gives qualifying physical purchases 30 days after delivery, but excludes opened or unsealed items and digital products. That term applies to qualifying purchases made directly from Nintendo; it does not automatically apply to an order from another retailer. For any physical game, check the actual seller’s return terms and any seal or condition requirements.

What should I do before submitting a refund request?
A little preparation makes it easier to identify the right policy and explain the case without overstating what the store promises.
- Confirm the seller. Find the receipt or account transaction and identify the storefront. If you purchased a third-party key or physical copy, the console maker may not be the seller responsible for the transaction.
- Record the relevant activity. Note the purchase date, release date if it was a pre-order, download or streaming status, and playtime if the store tracks it. Be accurate; do not assume one platform’s cutoff governs another.
- State the reason plainly. Explain whether you changed your mind, bought the wrong item, or encountered a fault. For a fault, include the symptom and the circumstances in which it occurs.
- Use the store’s official account route. Start with the transaction or refund flow associated with the account that paid. If the interface does not offer a request, use the platform’s support route where one is provided.
- Read the response before making assumptions. A request being submitted or received is not the same as approval. Follow any instructions the seller gives for that transaction.
Why do refund answers differ by country?
Store policies are only part of the answer. Consumer-protection laws can add rights or remedies, especially when a product is faulty, and terms that apply in one country may not apply in another. The examples above describe U.S. store policies except where Australia and New Zealand are specifically identified; they are not legal advice or a statement of every country’s rules.
If the store denies a request involving faulty content, check the consumer-protection guidance for your country and the terms of the purchase. Keep the order record and the seller’s response. Do not rely on a policy summary written for a different region as proof of your local rights.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does deleting a downloaded game cancel the purchase or make it refundable?
No refund policy cited here says that deleting an installation reverses the purchase or resets its eligibility conditions. If you want to request a refund, submit the request through the store rather than treating removal from your device as a cancellation.
Can I get a refund if I bought the game from a third-party key seller?
