You generally cannot enable Native Client (NaCl) in current desktop Chrome. The familiar --enable-nacl switch comes from documentation for early Chrome versions; it is not a supported fix for runtime support that has since been removed. If a NaCl-dependent app no longer loads, check for an updated version or replacement from its developer. Developers maintaining the app should review Google’s WebAssembly migration guidance.
Can you enable NaCl in current Chrome?
No supported general-purpose procedure exists for enabling NaCl in current desktop Chrome. Native Client was a sandbox for running compiled C and C++ code in a browser. Google says it was deprecated in 2020, and the old --enable-nacl command-line instruction belongs to historical Chrome documentation, not a current troubleshooting method. Chromium’s historical Native Client documentation should not be treated as instructions for present-day Chrome.
NaCl’s lifecycle differs by platform. In a June 30, 2023 announcement, Oliver Dunk, writing on behalf of Chrome Extensions DevRel, said Chromium planned to remove NaCl support for extensions on Windows, macOS, and Linux in Chrome 117, which became stable in September 2023. The announcement also described a temporary enterprise policy, NativeClientForceAllowed, available through Chrome 119; that was a limited transition measure, not a current general-purpose workaround. Read the Chromium Extensions announcement.
For ChromeOS, Google’s developer page identifies ChromeOS 138 as NaCl’s end-of-life milestone. A ChromeOS enterprise release-note search result also refers to NaCl being disabled from ChromeOS 132 onward. Those milestones should not be collapsed into one universal date: device behavior can depend on ChromeOS version, release channel, and management configuration. Google’s NaCl documentation describes the lifecycle and platform context.

What to check when a NaCl app will not load
- Identify the environment. Note the operating system, Chrome or ChromeOS version and release channel, and whether the device is managed by an organization.
- Identify the app type. Determine whether the software is a Chrome extension, a Chrome app, or another kind of web app. The removal announcement specifically addressed extension support on Windows, macOS, and Linux; ChromeOS has its own lifecycle details.
- Check with the app developer. Look for a current release or a documented replacement. If the app depends on NaCl and its developer has not provided a supported version, changing a Chrome flag is not an established way to restore the runtime.
- If the device is enterprise-managed, ask the administrator to check current device-specific documentation. The historical policy horizon and platform milestones do not establish a universal exception for every managed ChromeOS device or configuration.
Does --enable-nacl still work?
Do not rely on it. The switch appears in historical guidance for early Chrome versions. A command-line flag cannot be assumed to restore a runtime removed from a later browser release, and the cited Chrome documentation provides no current general-purpose enablement procedure.
Avoid downloading an unofficial old browser or an unverified binary to run a legacy NaCl app. The official lifecycle information does not validate those approaches as supported or safe fixes.

What should developers use instead?
Google points developers toward WebAssembly for existing or new high-performance web applications. If you maintain a NaCl project, use Google’s WebAssembly migration documentation to plan a port and verify that the resulting app works in the browsers and environments you support. For end users, the practical next step is to ask the app’s developer whether a WebAssembly-based or otherwise supported replacement is available.
