Yes—but only if the fan has an infrared (IR) receiver and the transmitter sends commands the fan understands. An IR transmitter can replace or automate a compatible fan remote; it cannot directly control a fan that listens only for radio frequency (RF) signals or uses a wired controller.
How IR fan control works
An IR remote sends modulated light pulses that a receiver in the fan or its controller decodes as commands such as power or speed. A transmitter must match the fan’s command format closely enough for that receiver to recognize it; having an IR LED alone does not make a fan controllable.
One example is STMicroelectronics’ STEVAL-IHM037V1 reference design. It uses a receiver for a 38 kHz IR signal, an STM8S003 microcontroller to decode an example RC5 protocol, and a TRIAC to regulate fan power by changing its firing angle. The manual says the example firmware can also work with NEC and other IR protocols, but this is one design, not a universal description of fan controllers. See the STMicroelectronics UM1546 manual.
A small educational DC-motor project uses a different setup: a remote sends commands to an IR receiver, a microcontroller decodes them, and an L293D motor driver controls the motor. That is a low-voltage learning project, not instructions for installing a household ceiling-fan controller. See Keyestudio’s IR Remote Fan project.

First identify what controls your fan
- Look for an IR receiver. If the fan came with an IR remote, check the fan or its controller for a receiver window and consult the model’s documentation. A working original remote is useful for checking whether the fan responds to IR.
- Check for RF or wired control. Some ceiling-fan kits use RF transmitters and receivers, including proprietary systems. An IR blaster will not directly control an RF-only receiver. Leviton notes that some fan systems include RF kits and recommends checking with the fan manufacturer for proprietary systems. Read Leviton’s compatibility guidance.
- Find the exact model and controller details. A replacement remote may need to match the fan’s receiver or brand-specific system. Do not assume a remote described as “universal” supports every fan.
Choose a control method
| Option | Best fit | What to verify | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY microcontroller and IR LED | A project where you can identify or learn the fan’s commands | IR protocol, button codes, modulation, and transmitter hardware | A receiver module can help capture or inspect a working remote’s commands, but compatibility is fan-specific. |
| Smart IR controller | Automating an existing IR-controlled fan without building a transmitter | Whether the particular hub supports the exact fan and commands you need | A product category or large code library does not prove support for your fan. |
| Matched replacement remote and receiver | Replacing a lost remote or incompatible controller | Fan model, receiver, and manufacturer compatibility information | Some systems are brand- or model-specific; a receiver replacement is a separate electrical installation. |
Build a microcontroller transmitter
For a DIY setup, the microcontroller needs to send the fan’s actual commands through an IR LED transmitter. A separate IR receiver module is useful for capturing or inspecting signals from a working original remote. You need to identify the fan’s protocol and the codes for the functions you want; the Keyestudio project illustrates basic receiver, board, and motor-control concepts, but is not a tested parts list for a household fan.
Use a smart IR controller
A smart IR hub is a ready-made alternative if the fan already accepts IR. Tuya describes an IR/RF control solution with Wi-Fi, an IR LED, and an integrated IR receiver, with use cases including fans, televisions, and air conditioners. Tuya reports that its solution supports “more than 4,000 code libraries” in documentation last updated June 21, 2024; that vendor-reported library count is not independent evidence that a particular fan’s commands are included. See Tuya’s IR/RF remote-control documentation.

Replace the remote or receiver as a matched system
Check the fan maker’s documentation for the exact model before choosing a replacement. Compatibility may be limited even within a brand: Westinghouse says its cited infrared ceiling-fan and light remote is compatible with Westinghouse fans except Hugger models. Check Westinghouse’s stated compatibility.
What to expect from an IR transmitter
- Commands are limited to what the fan supports. Power, speed, timer, oscillation, or other modes depend on the original fan controls and the commands the transmitter can reproduce.
- Sending a command is not the same as knowing the fan’s state. IR control generally sends commands; the cited documentation does not establish that the fan reports its current state back to a hub. Do not assume an app will know whether the fan is actually on or what speed it is using.
- An emitter or hub does not require changing fan wiring. Replacing a receiver or adding a mains fan controller does involve electrical work. Any replacement must be rated for the fan and installed according to its documentation.
When IR is the wrong approach
If the fan listens only to RF, an IR transmitter cannot directly operate it. QIACHIP says its FLC05-E220V operations require a QIACHIP-brand transmitter and controller and cautions that “compatibility with products of other brands cannot be guaranteed.” That is a reminder to verify the exact system rather than assume cross-brand compatibility. Read QIACHIP’s FLC05-E220V documentation. For an RF or proprietary fan system, use a compatible transmitter and receiver or ask the fan manufacturer about supported replacements.
