Sometimes. It depends on which Nintendo Switch 2 model you have: the Japanese-Language System (Japan only) supports Japanese alone, while the Multi-Language System lets you choose another supported language, including English. A console bought in Japan is not necessarily the Japanese-only model, so check the model before changing settings.

Check which Japanese Switch 2 model you have

Model System languages Nintendo Account and eShop Region setting
Japanese-Language System (Japan only) Japanese only; no system-language option. Can be linked only to Nintendo Accounts set to Japan; eShop is for Japan-region software. No Region entry in System Settings.
Multi-Language System 16 languages total: Japanese and 15 others, including English and regional language variants. Accepts Nintendo Accounts from all country/region settings. Nintendo says some Switch 2 models cannot change region; check the console settings.

Nintendo describes the Japanese-only model as “designed for use in Japan only.” Its product page advises people who need another system language to consider the Multi-Language System. Nintendo lists June 5, 2025 as the Multi-Language System’s release date; that is not a guarantee of current stock or price. Change the language on a supported Switch 2

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Language.
  4. Choose the language you want.
  5. Select Restart to confirm.

The console restarts in the selected language, and any suspended software closes. Save your progress and exit your game before confirming. Nintendo Support: How to Change the System Language

If you cannot read the current language

Use the HOME Menu’s gear icon to open System Settings, then navigate to the System and Language entries in the settings list. Nintendo Japan also publishes guidance for recovering from an incorrectly selected language; its screenshots are for the original Switch, and Nintendo notes that Switch 2 screens differ slightly. Follow the labels and layout on your own console rather than relying on screenshot-specific button positions. Nintendo Japan: Language selection support

What changing the system language affects

The setting changes the console menus. Some games follow the system language, but others have a separate in-game language setting. If a title remains in another language after changing the console setting, check that game’s own options; the system setting cannot override a language choice controlled by the software. Changing region does not add languages

On models with a Region setting, Nintendo lists Japan, the Americas, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and Hong Kong/Taiwan/South Korea as region choices. Changing region requires accepting the applicable regional terms and restarting, and some Switch 2 models do not support a region change. The Japanese-Language System has neither a Language nor a Region entry, so changing region cannot make it display English or add other system languages. If your Japanese-only console needs another language

There is no settings change that adds another system language to the Japanese-Language System. The relevant alternative is a different console: Nintendo’s Multi-Language System supports 16 system languages and accepts Nintendo Accounts from all country/region settings. Check the exact model and its current regional compatibility before buying; stock and pricing can vary.
