What Spotify announced for iPhone in May 2025
On May 19, 2025, Spotify said Apple had approved an iPhone app update for users in the United States. Spotify described the update as letting them see audiobook prices, buy individual audiobooks, and purchase “Top Up” listening hours beyond the 15 hours included with Premium each month. This was a U.S.-specific announcement, not evidence of a worldwide iPhone rollout. Spotify’s earlier description of its audiobook launch explains the previous flow: users who found a locked audiobook in the app were sent to a web page to buy it, then returned to the app to listen. Where Spotify says to pay now
Spotify’s current U.S. audiobook FAQ says individual audiobooks can be purchased in the Spotify Web Player and then listened to in the app. Its support documentation also says payments for the Audiobooks Access plan and extra listening hours are handled on the web. These current instructions do not match the broader iPhone purchase flow Spotify announced in May 2025. The available information does not establish whether direct in-app checkout remains available to some U.S. users, has changed, or is no longer offered. If the iPhone app displays a price and purchase control for your account, follow the on-screen flow; otherwise, use the Web Player and confirm that the title or listening hours appear in your account before returning to the app.

Why the price or Buy option may be missing
- Your checkout route may differ from the 2025 announcement. Spotify’s current U.S. FAQ points individual-title buyers to the Web Player, while its May 2025 announcement described iPhone purchases.
- You may be outside the United States. The iPhone change was announced for U.S. users, and the Audiobooks Access plan described by Spotify is U.S.-only.
- The title may require a separate purchase. Monthly listening hours and an individual audiobook purchase are different entitlements; an included allowance does not mean every title is unlocked.
- You may be looking for a plan or top-up purchase. Spotify’s support page says those payments are web-only, even though the May 2025 announcement described top-ups through the U.S. iPhone experience.
How to complete a purchase without confusing hours for ownership
- For one title: Open the Spotify Web Player, find the audiobook, and follow the purchase option shown there. Spotify’s current U.S. FAQ identifies the Web Player as the individual-title purchase route.
- For monthly access or more listening time: Check Spotify’s audiobook plan details and use the web payment route described in Spotify support. Verify whether the option is a monthly plan or a top-up before confirming.
- Return to the app to listen: Spotify says purchased audiobooks can be listened to in the app. Check your library or the title’s page after purchase; an individual title and plan hours provide different access.
Do Premium audiobook hours roll over?
No. Spotify says unused hours in the U.S. Audiobooks Access plan expire monthly. That 15-hour monthly allowance is not the same as purchasing an individual audiobook, which Spotify lists as a separate purchase option. Check the current plan terms for your account and location, since audiobook availability depends on country and plan.
