On Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft says the agent only suggests settings; you must choose Apply to make a change, and you can undo it. If search looks different, the cause may instead be background indexing, a changed search preference, or different recommendations and results. Check the specific symptom and restore only the relevant setting.
What can “Windows Search changed my settings” mean?
Search results changing does not necessarily mean a setting changed. Separate these possibilities before troubleshooting:
- A setting changed: indexing locations, file-content indexing, search permissions, history, and personalization are separate controls.
- Results or suggestions look different: Windows can personalize Start and search results based on app launches, and Settings can display recommendations or offers.
- Indexing is running: Windows updates its index in the background as files change. That is normal maintenance, not proof that a preference was reset.
- Files are missing from results: the index may not cover their location, or the files may be hidden or moved.
Microsoft’s documentation does not establish one universal cause for an unexplained setting change. Identify the exact toggle or behavior, and note your Windows version and build before trying to diagnose it further.
Can the Copilot+ Settings agent change a setting automatically?
No. Microsoft Support says, “The agent only suggests settings; it doesn’t make any changes automatically.” The agent is available on Copilot+ PCs, not every Windows device. To apply a suggested change, you must select Apply; Microsoft says the change can be undone. See Microsoft’s explanation of the Settings agent.

Use the path for your Windows version and address only the setting that matches the symptom. Labels can change with Windows updates and page revisions.
Check indexing scope and locations
In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. Review Find my files (Classic or Enhanced) and any customized indexed locations. In Windows 10, open Settings > Search > Searching Windows.

Classic indexes common user folders by default; Enhanced indexes all user folders and files. A broader scope can make more locations searchable, but may use more system resources. Indexing file properties and indexing file contents are also distinct choices. See Microsoft’s guide to Search indexing.
Review permissions, search history, and web-search behavior
In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions. Check the controls relevant to your concern, such as SafeSearch, cloud content search, or device history. The Clear device search history control clears search history saved locally on the device; it is not an indexing reset. Windows 10 uses Settings > Search > Permissions & History. Microsoft lists these paths in its Windows Search and Privacy guidance.

Check personalization and Settings recommendations
In Windows 11, inspect Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. The app-launch tracking control affects personalization in Start and search; the page also documents a control for suggested content in Settings. On older Windows 11 installations, the page name or navigation may differ: Microsoft says the older General privacy page is being replaced by Recommendations & offers on newer versions. See Microsoft’s Recommendations & offers instructions and its legacy General privacy settings context.
Undo a change made through the Settings agent
If you used the Copilot+ Settings agent and want to reverse its applied change, use the agent’s undo control if available. Microsoft’s Settings agent guidance says an applied change can be undone.

What if Windows Search stopped finding files?
Missing or stale file results call for indexing and file-location checks, not a broad settings reset. Microsoft’s guidance is to run the built-in troubleshooter and check whether an upgrade moved the file.
- Open Advanced indexing options.
- Select Advanced, then choose Troubleshoot search and indexing and follow the prompts.
- Check whether the file is hidden or was moved, particularly if the problem began after a Windows upgrade. If you find it in search, choose Open file location to see where it is.
See Microsoft’s instructions for finding lost files after upgrading Windows.

The paths above reflect Microsoft Support documentation checked on October 7, 2026. The Windows Search and Privacy page cited here is the Australian English support page; the indexing and Settings-agent guidance is served in US English. Navigation can vary by Windows version and page revision. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; its documented paths remain useful for locating these controls, but Windows 10 is no longer in standard support.
