Yes. Wave uses double-entry accounting: every journal entry must have equal debits and credits. Its web app includes a journal-entry workflow for recording transactions, including business activity where no money changes hands.
How double-entry bookkeeping works in Wave
Wave Help Center says its accounting system is double-entry, “which means debits must equal credits.” A journal entry records the effect of a transaction across accounts; it is not simply a note or a one-sided adjustment. Wave checks the totals and will not let you save an entry that does not balance.
Debit and credit describe which side of an account an amount is recorded on; they do not automatically mean “increase” and “decrease.” The effect depends on the account type. For example, Wave’s guidance says a deposit to an asset account is a debit and a withdrawal is a credit. In a transfer, the account funds leave is credited and the destination account is debited. - Open Accounting > Transactions.
- Choose Add transaction > Add journal entry.
- Enter the transaction date and description.
- Add the account lines, entering debit and credit amounts as appropriate. Add more lines if needed.
- Check that total debits equal total credits, then save. Wave prevents saving if the entry is unbalanced.
After saving, Wave displays the journal entry as one transaction on the Transactions page. The workflow and its balance requirement are described in Wave’s journal-transaction instructions.
When to use a journal entry instead of a categorized transaction
A journal transaction is for business activity that does not involve money changing hands, according to Wave. If money was received or paid through a bank, card, or other payment account, the ordinary income or expense transaction workflow may be more appropriate. Journal transactions can only be entered in the business currency.

That distinction matters because the journal-entry tool is not a substitute for recording every payment through the normal transaction workflow. Wave’s Transactions overview describes transaction functions, while its journal-entry instructions cover non-cash activity.
Opening balances depend on the account
Wave documents different starting-balance procedures by account type. For bank accounts, credit cards, and loans, its instructions describe entering an income transaction categorized to equity. For non-payment accounts, they describe journal transactions. Examples include debiting an asset and crediting Owner’s Equity, or crediting a liability and debiting Owner’s Equity.

Because the appropriate accounts and amounts depend on what the opening balance represents, follow the account-specific directions in Wave’s opening-balance guide rather than treating one example as a universal setup rule.

The product documentation establishes that Wave supports balanced journal entries and explains some common debit-and-credit mechanics. It does not establish that the software meets every business’s jurisdiction-specific accounting, tax, audit, inventory, or industry requirements. Those are separate questions from whether the software uses double-entry bookkeeping.
