U.S. solar manufacturers are betting that tandem solar cells can turn higher efficiency into a competitive edge—but a lab record is not the same as an affordable, durable panel rolling off a factory line. The technology stacks light-absorbing layers to capture more of the sun’s spectrum, and manufacturers have described a possible output gain of about 25% over many current panels. That figure is a reported potential, not a verified result across commercial products or installations.
What is the technology leap?
Most solar panels use silicon cells, which convert part of the sunlight that reaches them into electricity. A tandem cell layers two or more light-absorbing materials with different bandgaps. The top layer can capture wavelengths that suit it, while light it does not use effectively passes to a lower layer tuned to other wavelengths.
Perovskite-on-silicon is a leading hybrid approach: a perovskite absorber is combined with conventional silicon. The U.S. Department of Energy says perovskites can be tuned to absorb wavelengths silicon does not use as efficiently, giving hybrid tandems the potential to exceed the theoretical efficiency limit of a single-junction device. The “layer cake” idea is promising, but stacking materials introduces manufacturing and durability challenges as well as efficiency opportunities.
What the 25% claim does—and does not—mean
The news report described tandem products as potentially generating about 25% more energy than most current panels. Tandem PV’s company notice likewise summarized the opportunity as roughly a quarter more electricity from the same footprint. Neither statement establishes that a commercial tandem panel produces 25% more energy in every installation. Cell efficiency, full-module efficiency, and energy yield in actual weather and mounting conditions are different measures; the reported figure should be treated as a potential, not a guaranteed output increase.

Why U.S. manufacturers see an opening
Tandem technology could let manufacturers compete on performance and product differentiation rather than simply trying to match the scale and cost of established silicon production. That is an opportunity, not proof that the United States has already caught up: an efficient design matters commercially only if it can be manufactured repeatedly, last outdoors, and compete on the cost of electricity it delivers.
The scale gap is substantial. The IEA Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme reported that China accounted for 90.1% of global PV cell production in 2024, compared with 0.6% for the United States. Those figures refer to cells, not module assembly, and are not tandem-specific. Separately, a U.S. Department of Energy supply-chain review found no active U.S. ingot, wafer, or silicon-cell manufacturing capacity in its 2022 baseline. That is historical context, not a current inventory of U.S. manufacturing.

Nor is tandem research an exclusively American pursuit. IEA PVPS reported that Chinese company LONGi held a 34.6% perovskite/silicon tandem research-cell efficiency record as of March 2025. That was a research-cell record, not a commercial module result. The competitive question is therefore whether U.S. companies can turn differentiated designs into reliable, bankable products and manufacture them at competitive scale—not whether China is absent from tandem development.
What commercialization evidence matters?
The news report named Tandem PV, First Solar, and Hanwha Qcells as companies preparing tandem products for commercial sale, and said products had been tested and certified. It did not identify all the tests, certifying bodies, models, or public performance records. The companies should not be assumed to share the same design, certification status, sales timeline, or degradation results.

DOE’s perovskite target framework illustrates why one efficiency figure cannot settle readiness. It lists a 27% efficiency target for hybrid tandem devices alongside requirements concerning module area and interconnected cells, selected IEC/ISOS quality tests, and outdoor stability. These are development targets, not evidence that any named company has met them. A credible assessment needs evidence at several levels:
- Module performance: Look for independently validated efficiency for a full module, with its test area and configuration stated, rather than relying only on a small research cell.
- Durability: Laboratory stress tests can screen for failure modes, but sustained outdoor exposure and measured degradation are needed to judge service life.
- Repeatable manufacturing: A prototype or demonstration line is not the same as consistent factory output, shipped volume, and acceptable manufacturing yield.
- Energy yield: Nameplate efficiency does not by itself show how much electricity a panel will generate across real conditions, including temperature, sunlight, and system design.
- Economics and finance: Manufacturing cost and sale price must be assessed alongside energy yield, financing acceptance, and levelized cost of electricity—the cost per unit of electricity over a system’s life.
DOE has also cautioned that a major perovskite market impact by 2035 would be unprecedented. That makes scale-up a real uncertainty, not a step that follows automatically from a strong lab result. Modeled future PV technology mixes can explore possible scenarios, but they are conditional analyses rather than guarantees of tandem market share.

What could stop tandem panels from gaining ground?
Faster degradation
Buyers’ concern about whether tandem modules degrade faster than conventional panels goes to the heart of the business case. If a panel loses performance more quickly, its initial efficiency advantage may not yield more lifetime electricity. Outdoor stability evidence and transparent degradation measurements are therefore essential; a short test or research-cell record cannot answer the full service-life question.
Price and manufacturing complexity
A higher-efficiency module can still be a poor economic choice if it costs too much to produce or sell. Tandem processes must be scalable and reproducible, and costs must be weighed against actual energy yield. The relevant comparison is not efficiency alone but whether a project’s levelized cost of electricity improves.

Supply-chain scale
Even successful tandem products need materials, equipment, production capacity, and dependable supply chains. The U.S. cell-production share figures show why a new technology does not erase the existing manufacturing gap by itself. Cell production and module assembly are distinct stages, so neither should be used as a substitute for the other when judging U.S. competitiveness.
How to judge whether the bet is working
Watch for evidence that moves in order from laboratory promise to repeatable commercial performance: independently validated full-module results; outdoor stability and degradation data; production at consistent quality and useful volume; and pricing that produces a competitive lifetime cost of electricity. Until those measures are established for specific products, tandem solar is a plausible route to a U.S. technology advantage—not proof that U.S. manufacturers have caught China.
