MSI’s advertised non-K CPU overclocking feature is for the MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI—not the ordinary MAG B760M MORTAR. The names are similar, but MSI identifies the MAX WIFI model as the board with an onboard OC Engine. Its statement is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee for every processor, BIOS version, or configuration.

Which B760M Mortar does MSI say can overclock non-K CPUs?

MSI names the MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI in its OC Engine discussion. The company says the engine allows non-K series CPUs to overclock despite the B760 chipset’s usual overclocking limitation. MSI describes the board’s 12+1+1 power phase design in the same material, but that specification does not establish a particular overclock or performance gain.

The ordinary MAG B760M MORTAR is a separate product. MSI’s base-board specification and overview do not document the MAX model’s OC Engine, so the MAX WIFI claim should not be applied to the non-MAX board merely because their names resemble one another. MSI’s product pages distinguish the models: MAG B760M MORTAR overview and MAG B760M MORTAR specifications.

MSI’s wording is: “Even though the B760 chipset does not support overclocking, this model has an OC Engine built onto the motherboard that allows the non-K series CPU to overclock to its maximum frequency.” The surrounding passage identifies “this model” as the MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI. Read it as MSI’s description of that product, not as an independently verified result or a quantified promise of extra performance. MSI’s VRM and OC Engine discussion

How the ordinary MORTAR and MAX WIFI differ

Model What MSI’s cited material establishes What it does not establish
MAG B760M MORTAR MSI lists an Intel B760 chipset, LGA1700 socket, and compatibility with 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation Intel Core processors, plus Pentium Gold and Celeron processors. Its DDR5 specifications include four memory slots and up to 256 GB capacity. MSI specifications The cited base-board pages do not document the MAX WIFI’s OC Engine or confirm non-K CPU overclocking. MSI overview
MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI MSI says this model has an onboard OC Engine that enables non-K series CPU overclocking. MSI’s feature discussion The cited material does not provide a model-by-model CPU compatibility list, BIOS-by-BIOS guarantee, independent benchmark, or quantified performance gain.

CPU overclocking is not the same as memory overclocking

The ordinary MORTAR’s DDR5 specification lists memory frequency tiers up to 7200+ MHz (OC), with supported results dependent on the configuration. That “OC” notation concerns memory operation; it is not evidence that the base board can overclock a non-K CPU. Keep the CPU feature claim tied to the MAX WIFI model and the memory figures tied to the base board’s specification.

What to check before buying or changing settings

  • Read the complete model name. Look for “MAX WIFI” if you are relying on MSI’s documented OC Engine claim. Do not assume a listing for MAG B760M MORTAR or MAG B760M MORTAR WIFI is the MAX model; MSI has a separate overview for the non-MAX WIFI variation at MAG B760M MORTAR WIFI.
  • Check the exact CPU and board support information. The cited MSI material does not identify every non-K CPU that works with the feature. Confirm the current support page and BIOS notes for the precise board and processor before relying on a pairing.
  • Do not treat CEP as proof of overclocking support. MSI separately discusses disabling CEP for certain processors and chipsets. That BIOS control is a distinct feature and does not establish that a particular non-K CPU can be overclocked on the MAX WIFI. MSI’s CEP and BIOS article

What MSI’s claim does—and does not—tell you

MSI explicitly advertises non-K overclocking through the OC Engine on the MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI. The cited material does not verify results independently, specify a guaranteed clock increase, or promise support across all CPUs and BIOS revisions. If you are choosing between boards for this feature, the model suffix is decisive: the source-backed claim belongs to the MAX WIFI, not the ordinary MORTAR.
