The CuVoodoo USB Bug Detector is a simple screening tool for USB-A cables and devices: it lights a BUGGED LED when the connected item draws more than about 1.6 mA. That can flag unexpected electronics, including some malicious cables, but it cannot identify a chip or prove intent. Its designer says the detector limits power to reduce risk while testing; that is a design rationale, not a guarantee for every unknown device.
What the CuVoodoo detector checks
CuVoodoo describes its device as identifying “USB type-A cables (or devices) with integrated circuits.” Its target is unexpected active electronics inside a cable or attached USB device. One example is an O.MG Cable, which can conceal a Wi-Fi microcontroller and provide remote command capability. iFixit describes the cable as a covert data-collection and exfiltration device with Wi-Fi hotspot capability.
The CuVoodoo is therefore a screening tool for signs of electronics, not a general-purpose cable-quality tester or a forensic analyzer. Its result is about observed power draw, not what a detected component does.
How its detection works
Insert a CR1220 coin-cell battery, press reset, then connect the suspect cable. As described in Gareth Halfacree’s 2022 Hackster report, current draw above 1.6 mA trips a NOR-gate SR latch and turns on the BUGGED LED. A SIMULATE button lets you check that the detector and battery can trigger the indicator.

- 【Multiple Power Supply Options】The black button on the left can flexibly switch the power supply mode, and support the use of AAA battery or Type C 5V to stably supply power to the USB tester
The circuit’s 1 kΩ inline resistor and limited 3.3 V supply cap the current available at the USB plug at 3.3 mA. CuVoodoo creator Kévin presented that limit as a safety measure: it is generally too little to power an integrated circuit properly, especially a radio interface. It should not be treated as a universal guarantee for every unknown cable or device.
Hackster reported that the detector draws 3 mA while the LED is on and 64 nA while it is off. Kévin estimated that a typical 35 mAh CR1220 could provide 62 years of idle battery life. That is an estimate based on idle draw, not a promise of real-world service life; battery condition and use affect results.

What a BUGGED light does—and does not—mean
- It means: the test circuit observed enough current draw to cross its threshold, indicating unexpected electronics may be present.
- It does not mean: the detector has identified a particular chip, shown that the cable is malicious, or established what data it can access.
- A dark LED is not a forensic clearance. The available specifications do not establish CuVoodoo’s false-positive or false-negative rate, nor do they show that it can detect every dormant implant.
Use the result as a reason to avoid trusting a suspicious cable, not as proof of either safety or compromise. Do not connect a cable you distrust to a computer or phone merely to investigate it.
