Yes. Siri can use information from Messages, Mail, and Contacts to answer requests and provide suggestions. That does not mean it automatically sends every message, email, or contact to Apple. Whether information stays on your device or is processed by Apple depends on the request, feature, settings, and device. Here is what Apple says happens—and how to review the controls.
What does it mean for Siri to “read” your information?
Siri can use information available on your device. For example, it can search or refer to messages and email when you ask a relevant question, and it can use Contacts details—including information in your My Card, such as your name, addresses, and relationships—to understand requests. Siri can also use this information to power suggestions. Apple describes these capabilities in its Siri settings and features guide.
There are two separate privacy questions: whether Siri can access information on the device to fulfill a request, and whether that information is transmitted to Apple or another service. Local access does not by itself mean the entire mailbox or address book is uploaded.
Does Siri send messages, emails, or contacts to Apple?
Not necessarily. Apple says some Siri requests are processed on the device, while others may be sent to Apple servers. For certain Apple Intelligence requests, processing may use Private Cloud Compute. The route depends on the request and available features; it is not accurate to say that every request is always local or that Apple never receives contextual data. Apple’s Siri, Dictation & Privacy disclosure and Apple Intelligence privacy notice describe these routes.

Apple’s privacy features overview explains that information used when asking Siri to read or search on-device information such as Messages and Notes is kept on device or sent to Private Cloud Compute. Which route applies can vary with your request and settings.
What does Apple retain after you make a Siri request?
Apple distinguishes audio from transcripts and related request data. According to its current Siri, Dictation & Privacy disclosure, Apple does not retain Siri audio by default unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. Apple may retain transcripts and related request history for up to two years. That history is associated with a rotating, device-generated random identifier, rather than your Apple Account or email address; Apple says the identifier rotates multiple times per hour. A small subset selected for review may be kept longer.

What changes if you enable Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence?
Apple says enabling Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence permits it to collect and use text and audio interactions with Siri, Dictation, and Translate to improve its products and foundation models. Apple says this data is not associated with your Apple Account, personal details are removed where possible, and reviewed audio is accessed only by employees subject to confidentiality obligations. These are Apple’s stated privacy measures in its Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence disclosure.

This setting changes the data Apple says it may use for improvement; it is distinct from the processing route Siri uses to answer an individual request.
Can a third-party app get your contacts through Siri?
Not simply because Siri is enabled. Apple’s Siri guide explains that Siri can use your My Card to understand details such as relationships. Apple Platform Security says that when Siri communicates with a third-party app extension, it checks the app’s user-controlled permissions before providing protected data. If an app cannot access Contacts, Siri will not resolve a relationship such as “my mother” for that app. If permission is allowed, Siri may provide information relevant to the particular request—not automatically the full address book.

When Siri interacts with a third-party app, that app’s own terms and privacy policy also apply. Review which apps have Contacts access and which Siri integrations you have enabled.

- Review Siri features: Open Settings and review the Siri controls available on your device, including options related to reading messages. Menu names and availability vary by software version, device, and region; Apple’s Siri settings guide describes the controls.
- Review app permissions: In Settings, check which apps have access to Contacts and review Siri-related integrations for those apps. The precise path and labels can differ by OS version.
- Review improvement settings: Apple directs users to Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements for Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence controls. Available labels can vary by device, software version, and region.
Apple’s own summary is: “Siri is designed to protect your information and enable you to choose what you share.” That is Apple’s stated approach in its Siri, Dictation & Privacy disclosure.
