Removing preinstalled Google apps is not a proven way to speed up a Pixel. Uninstalling an app can free storage, and disabling a specific app may help if it is causing a problem—but Google does not report a general speed boost from removing preinstalled apps. Start by checking storage and troubleshooting the slowdown before changing system apps.
Why removing apps may not make your Pixel faster
Storage and memory do different jobs. Storage holds files such as photos and music; memory helps run Android and apps. Freeing storage may help when space is tight, but it does not show that a particular preinstalled Google app caused the slowdown. Google says a Pixel can have issues when less than 10% of its storage is available. Treat that as a troubleshooting warning, not a promise that crossing the threshold will improve speed. Google’s official troubleshooting guidance does not establish a universal list of preinstalled Google apps whose removal speeds up Pixel phones, or a measured speed gain from removing them.
Check what is actually slowing the phone
- Check available storage: Open Settings > Storage. If less than 10% is available, free space and then see whether the issue changes.
- Install updates and restart: Check for Android and app updates, then restart the phone. These are part of Google’s slow-phone troubleshooting steps.
- Test in safe mode: Safe mode helps determine whether a downloaded app is involved. If the problem disappears there, remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, checking the phone after each removal. Follow Google’s Pixel troubleshooting steps.
- Check app data carefully: Clearing an app’s cache removes temporary files and may make the app slower the next time it opens while it rebuilds them. Clearing storage permanently deletes that app’s data. Use the latter only if you understand what data will be lost; see Google’s storage guidance.
What you can do with a preinstalled app
The available action depends on the app. Google says, “You can’t delete some system apps that came pre-installed on your Pixel phone. But you can disable most system apps.” The exact options and menu labels can vary by Android version. On versions that show these labels, go to Settings > Apps > All apps, select the app, and tap Disable if that option is available. - Uninstall: If the phone offers this action, it removes the app and may free storage.
- Disable: This turns off an app that cannot be uninstalled. It may stop the app from running, but can also remove or disrupt functionality that depends on it.
- Neither option: Leave the system app in place. Do not try to force its removal based on a generic debloating list.
Android may also optimize apps that have gone unused for a long time by deleting temporary files, revoking permissions, limiting background activity, and stopping notifications. Details are in Google’s guide to managing unused apps.
Do not disable Google Play services
Google says Google Play services is integrated with Android and cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled. Your phone uses Google services through it. Do not treat it as a removable preinstalled app when troubleshooting lag; see Google’s guidance on battery drain.

When to consider a factory reset
If updates, a restart, storage checks, and app troubleshooting do not solve the problem, Google’s advanced troubleshooting includes a factory reset. It removes device data and apps, so back up important data first. It is a recovery step, not a routine way to clean up preinstalled apps. Read Google’s slow Pixel phone guidance before proceeding.
