Possibly—but recovery is not guaranteed. Recuva’s documented approach for a reformatted disk is to enable Scan for non-deleted files and scan the card. Stop using the SD card first, and save anything recovered to a different drive.
What to do before scanning
Stop taking photos, copying files to the card, or formatting it again. New writes can overwrite data that might otherwise be recoverable. Microsoft also advises minimizing or avoiding computer use that could write to the affected drive in its Windows File Recovery guidance.
Connect the card to a Windows PC using a built-in card slot or a compatible reader. Recuva lists memory cards among the media it can scan and says it supports NTFS, FAT, and exFAT drives: Recuva product information.
How to scan a formatted SD card with Recuva
- Open Recuva and select the SD card as the location to scan.
- Open Options → Actions and enable Scan for non-deleted files, the setting CCleaner documents for damaged or reformatted disks: CCleaner’s Recuva instructions.
- Run the scan. If a standard scan does not find the files, try Recuva’s Deep Scan. CCleaner says it can take hours, is limited to listed file types, and may not preserve original filenames: CCleaner’s Deep Scan explanation.
- Restore found files to a different drive—not the SD card. Then open the recovered files to check whether they are complete and usable.
Why recovery may fail
A scan result does not prove that a file is intact. Recovery depends on whether the original data remains on the card, whether later writes have overwritten it, and how the file system stored the data. CCleaner says removable drives and media cards are nearly always FAT; it also notes that recovery is easier from NTFS than FAT and that fragmented files cannot be recovered from FAT. “Format” can refer to different operations. The available guidance does not establish whether a particular formatting operation overwrote the contents of a specific SD card, so the outcome for an individual card cannot be predicted from the word “formatted” alone.
CCleaner’s Recuva support guidance states: “Recuva does not come with any guarantee of successfully recovering any specific file.” A file that appears in the results may still be incomplete or fail to open. Recuva recommends restoring files elsewhere to avoid overwriting data on the source card: CCleaner’s guidance for damaged or formatted disks.

When to try Windows File Recovery instead
If Recuva does not find usable files, Windows users can compare Microsoft’s command-line Windows File Recovery tool. Microsoft recommends its Extensive mode for FAT or exFAT media and for formatted disks.
