WhatsApp says police cannot get intelligible call audio simply by intercepting traffic between callers or accessing WhatsApp’s relay servers: its voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted, so only participants’ devices can listen. That does not rule out other routes, such as access to a participant’s device, or establish when any particular form of access is lawful. The answer depends on what “tap” means, the data sought, and the jurisdiction.
What does “tap a WhatsApp call” mean?
The phrase can refer to several different things, and encryption affects them differently:
- Intercepting a live call’s audio in transit: WhatsApp says end-to-end encryption prevents intermediaries, including WhatsApp, from listening to the call.
- Getting information from WhatsApp: This is a separate question from obtaining call audio. WhatsApp describes a process for responding to legal requests and processes account and service information.
- Accessing a participant’s phone or another endpoint: That is distinct from accessing WhatsApp’s servers. End-to-end encryption does not establish that a device is inaccessible or uncompromised.
- Seeing a caller’s IP address: This concerns network-address visibility, not the ability to hear encrypted audio.
These distinctions matter: “police can’t listen through WhatsApp’s servers” is not the same claim as “police can never obtain evidence related to a call.”
Why WhatsApp says its servers cannot listen to call audio
WhatsApp says it completed its rollout of end-to-end encryption in 2016 using the Signal Protocol. Its security explanation says only the communicating users can read messages or listen to calls—not even WhatsApp. This describes the service’s stated design; it is not a guarantee that every participant’s device is secure.

Meta Engineering’s explanation of WhatsApp’s multi-device capability describes call secrets generated on the initiating device, encrypted for recipient devices, and used to protect the call. It says WhatsApp’s servers do not have access to those secrets. In practical terms, a server may help set up or relay a call without possessing the plaintext audio.

What changes when calls are relayed through WhatsApp?
WhatsApp’s “Protect IP Address in Calls” setting is intended to stop the other call participant from seeing a user’s IP address and inferring broad location or internet provider. When enabled, calls are relayed through WhatsApp servers. WhatsApp says they remain end-to-end encrypted during that relay.
So the feature addresses what the other participant can learn from a direct connection; it is not described as a way to prevent lawful access or hide a call from authorities. Meta Engineering explains the setting, along with Silence Unknown Callers, in its November 8, 2023 article on call security.

Can WhatsApp provide call recordings or call details?
WhatsApp’s stated encryption design means the company says it cannot listen to end-to-end encrypted call content. That does not mean the company has no information about users or the service, nor does it establish that every kind of call-related record is retained. Content and account or service information are different categories.
WhatsApp says it has a Law Enforcement Response Team and publishes information about government requests for user data. Its law-enforcement request information describes its process; a response to a legal request should not be mistaken for access to encrypted call audio.

The details of data handling also depend on region. For example, WhatsApp’s EEA Privacy Policy, effective July 2, 2026, describes account and service information and says messages are typically stored on users’ devices, temporarily held in encrypted form while being delivered, and deleted from WhatsApp’s servers after delivery. Those message-storage statements are specific to that policy and do not establish call-log retention or apply automatically in every region.

There is no universal legal answer. The title does not specify a country, and legal authority can vary by jurisdiction, the kind of information sought, and the method used. A live interception, a later request for provider-held information, and access to a user-controlled device raise different technical and legal questions.

It does not establish that police routinely intercept WhatsApp calls or set rules for every country.
For a real investigation, identify the country, the authority being used, whether the request concerns a live call or stored information, and whether it targets WhatsApp or a participant’s endpoint. A qualified lawyer in that jurisdiction can advise on the applicable law.
