Yes. Plex documents secure connections for its Android TV app, which Google TV devices can run. To keep a remote stream secure, enable Remote Access on the server, leave the Google TV app’s Allow Insecure Connections setting at Never, and consider setting the server’s Secure connections option to Required if every intended client supports secure connections. Remote Access makes the server reachable from outside your home; it does not, by itself, guarantee an encrypted connection.
Is Plex remote access secure?
Plex says that when a compatible Plex app connects to a Plex Media Server that can provide a secure connection, communication with the server and media streaming are secured. Plex lists Android TV as supporting secure connections, and says official Android TV and Google TV devices can install its regular Android app from Google Play. This is platform documentation, not a test of every Google TV model or app version.
There are two separate parts to remote playback:
- Reachability: Remote Access and router configuration let a device outside your home reach the server.
- Transport: The app and server secure-connection settings determine whether the connection is encrypted or can fall back to ordinary HTTP.
Plex also documents exceptions: Plex Companion casting is not always secure, and manually added connections in certain apps are not secure. The Android TV app’s documented support for secure connections should not be taken as a guarantee that every casting route or manually configured connection is encrypted. Plex’s secure-connection documentation explains the behavior and exceptions.
How do I set up Plex remote access on Google TV?
1. Install and link the Plex app
Install Plex from Google Play on the Google TV device and sign in or link the app to your Plex account. Big-screen Plex apps commonly use a four-character code for linking. Plex says linking helps the app find owned or shared servers and supports secure connections when the server is also signed in.

2. Enable Remote Access on the server
- In Plex Web App, open Settings > Server > Remote Access.
- Make sure the server is signed in to a Plex account, then enable Remote Access.
- Let Plex try automatic router configuration using UPnP or NAT-PMP, if your router supports it. Confirm that Remote Access reports a successful connection.
If automatic setup fails, Plex supports manual port forwarding. Forward the chosen external port on your router to internal port 32400 at the server’s private IP address, then enter that external port in Plex’s manual-port setting. A wrong forwarding rule or double NAT can prevent remote access. Plex’s Remote Streaming (Setting Up Remote Access) article gives the configuration details.
Port forwarding only creates a route to the server; it does not decide whether the connection is encrypted. Set secure-connection behavior separately.

3. Choose secure-connection settings
On the server, open Settings > Server > Network and reveal advanced settings to find Secure connections. In the Android TV Plex app, look for Allow Insecure Connections in its settings. Labels or placement may vary by app version.
| Setting | Choice | Security and compatibility effect |
|---|---|---|
| Server: Secure connections | Required | Accepts only secure connections. A client that cannot connect securely will fail rather than use an insecure connection. |
| Server: Secure connections | Preferred (default) | Prefers secure connections but permits regular HTTP if secure access is unavailable or the client does not support it. |
| Android TV: Allow Insecure Connections | Never (default) | Does not permit insecure fallback in the app. |
| Android TV: Allow Insecure Connections | On same network | Allows insecure connections on the local network; does not permit that fallback generally. |
| Android TV: Allow Insecure Connections | Always | Allows insecure fallback whether the app is on the local network or connecting remotely. |
For a safety-focused setup, keep the app at Never. If all your intended clients connect successfully, set the server to Required as well. If you use Preferred, Plex favors security but allows HTTP fallback when needed. Plex’s secure-connections guide describes when Plex secures communication and streaming.

What if Google TV cannot connect securely?
Do not switch to Always as the first troubleshooting step: doing so permits insecure fallback. First check that Remote Access itself succeeds, the app and server are signed in, and the server’s secure-connection setting is not blocking a client that cannot connect securely. Plex clients typically indicate when a connection is insecure or when access is blocked because insecure connections are disallowed.
Plex identifies DNS rebinding protection on some routers or DNS providers as a possible cause of secure local connection problems. Its secure-connection guidance discusses DNS remedies and notes that Remote Access can sometimes work around the local issue by connecting through the public/WAN address. That may make Plex treat playback as remote, which can affect quality selection and remote bandwidth or transcoding limits. Make router or DNS changes only with guidance for your specific equipment.

Does remote playback require a Plex subscription on Google TV?
Network access and playback eligibility are separate questions. Plex’s remote personal-video playback requirements, introduced for affected apps from April 29, 2025, list Android mobile, iOS mobile, PlayStation, desktop, Roku, supported Smart TVs, web, and Xbox. The current list does not name Android TV, so it does not establish a specific subscription requirement for the Google TV Plex app. Plex says additional apps may be added as its newer experience rolls out; check its current remote playback requirements if playback is blocked.
