Not by itself, according to Owncast’s documented workflow. Owncast accepts an incoming RTMP broadcast; its documentation does not describe a built-in scheduler that selects prerecorded files and sends them onward to YouTube. To schedule different videos on YouTube, create scheduled broadcasts in YouTube Studio and use an encoder or playback system that sends each video to YouTube. If you also want the feed on Owncast, configure the encoder to send a separate output there; that dual-output setup is an implementation approach, not a configuration documented or tested by the cited guides.
What Owncast does—and does not document
Owncast is the destination for a broadcast from encoding software. Its RTMP ingest accepts the incoming stream at the /live/ path using the server’s stream key. Owncast documentation says, “In general Owncast is compatible with any software that uses RTMP to broadcast to a remote server.” Owncast broadcasting documentation
That is different from a media scheduler: the documented workflow does not have Owncast choose among files, start them at specified times, and relay them to YouTube. This conclusion is about the documented feature set, not a claim that no custom script, plugin, or external relay could ever be built.

- Create an event in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, go to the Manage tab, and schedule a live broadcast for each video or event you want to run. YouTube treats each broadcast as a distinct video.
- Set up the encoder or scheduled-playback tool. Configure it to play the intended prerecorded file and send the output to YouTube using the YouTube server URL and stream key for the event. A scheduled YouTube event does not, by itself, play a file; the encoder or playback system supplies the audio and video.
- Start the encoder at the scheduled time. YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions say to start the encoder, then check Live Control Room when the stream preview appears. Depending on the setup, an operator may still need to select Go live.
- Confirm the correct video and event. Check the preview and event details before going live. For a sequence of different videos, arrange for the playback system to start the matching file for each scheduled broadcast.
YouTube’s API model distinguishes a broadcast (the event/video) from a stream (the audio-video feed). One stream resource can be reused for broadcasts scheduled at different times, with only one event live at a time. That API-level arrangement manages event-to-stream relationships; it does not schedule or play prerecorded files by itself. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation

YouTube says streams that run for less than 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. Account for that when choosing separate scheduled events versus a continuous feed. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
How to include Owncast as another destination
If the same program should appear on both YouTube and Owncast, use an upstream encoder or other suitable workflow that can send separate outputs to both destinations. Send one output to YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key, and another to Owncast’s RTMP endpoint and stream key. Owncast’s default RTMP port is TCP 1935, and the stream key is used on the /live/ path; the port can be changed in server configuration. Owncast broadcasting documentation

This is a reasonable arrangement based on the two services’ documented endpoints, but the cited documentation does not specify or test a dual-destination playlist scheduler. Before relying on it, verify that your chosen encoder or automation tool supports both outputs, scheduled file playback, and the timing behavior you need. In particular, confirm whether it can keep the destinations synchronized and whether YouTube still requires an operator to click Go live.
Encoding settings and stream-key checks
- Owncast video and audio: Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for compatibility.
- Keyframes: Owncast recommends a keyframe every two seconds. In FFmpeg,
-gspecifies the GOP size in frames: at 60 fps,-g 120corresponds to a two-second interval. The frame rate and GOP value must match the interval you intend. - Owncast ingest: Use the Owncast RTMP destination and key, including the
/live/path. Check that TCP port 1935 is reachable if you use the default port, or use the configured replacement port. - YouTube ingest: Use the server URL and stream key associated with the scheduled YouTube event or stream setup. Keep keys private and confirm the encoder is pointed at the intended destination before starting.
- Capacity: The quality a particular Owncast server can receive and serve depends on its processing capacity, network speed, and deployment. The format recommendations are not a guarantee that every server can support every resolution or bitrate.
Owncast’s FFmpeg example demonstrates encoding and sending a live capture to Owncast, including AAC audio and the frame-based -g setting. It is not a ready-made prerecorded playlist scheduler, so adapt only the relevant output and encoding concepts rather than treating the camera-capture command as a scheduled-file solution. Choosing a workflow
| Approach | What it schedules or sends | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio plus a software encoder/playback tool | YouTube event scheduling plus the encoder’s selected video feed | That the tool can play the right prerecorded file at the required time, send it to YouTube, and meet any Live Control Room start requirement. |
| Encoder with a separate Owncast output | Potentially sends the same upstream program to YouTube and Owncast | Dual-output support, each destination’s URL/key, scheduling support, and whether the outputs behave as needed. The cited guides do not document a specific playlist setup. |
| AJA HELO Plus with optional PlayToStream | YouTube’s encoder guide lists PlayToStream as a way to schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. | Current product availability, exact configuration, and whether it can also output to your Owncast server. Its YouTube listing is not evidence of Owncast compatibility. |
YouTube’s encoder guide describes the AJA HELO Plus option as a direct-to-YouTube alternative. It does not establish that the device receives an Owncast stream or relays Owncast output. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
Copyright, reused content, and broadcast planning
Scheduling a file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use videos, music, artwork, and other material that you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies and any rights restrictions that apply to your channel. A playlist of prerecorded material should also be planned as programming for a live audience, not assumed to qualify for monetization merely because it is streamed live; YouTube’s monetization and reused-content decisions depend on the content and channel, not on the scheduling method.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube event is scheduled, but no preview appears: Confirm the encoder is running and using the event’s YouTube server URL and stream key. Check outbound network access and the encoder’s connection status.
- Preview appears, but viewers cannot watch: Check Live Control Room for the event’s status and whether you must click Go live. A connected encoder preview is not necessarily the same as a live broadcast.
- Owncast receives no stream: Verify the server address, the
/live/path, the stream key, and TCP port 1935 if unchanged from the default. Check the server configuration if the port was customized. - One destination works and the other does not: Inspect each output independently. A working YouTube connection does not prove the Owncast endpoint, key, network route, or dual-output configuration is correct.
- Playback starts with the wrong file or at the wrong time: Review the scheduler’s event-to-file mapping, timezone, and start behavior. YouTube schedules the broadcast event; the separate playback system must supply the intended recording.
- Video is unstable or unsupported: Check encoder load, network capacity, H.264/AAC compatibility, and a two-second keyframe interval. Owncast notes that server, network, and processing capacity constrain achievable quality.
Or let it run in the cloud
