A Windows cleanup command can remove files you no longer need, but there is no command that guarantees it will free exactly 10 GB. Microsoft documents a repeatable Disk Cleanup profile using cleanmgr; the space recovered depends on what files are on your PC and which cleanup categories you select.
What the Disk Cleanup command does—and what it cannot promise
Microsoft describes Disk Cleanup as a tool that “clears unnecessary files from your computer’s hard disk.” Its command-line options let you save cleanup choices as a profile, then run those choices again later. Microsoft’s cleanmgr command reference, last updated November 1, 2024, lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported.
The command does not specify a target amount of space. Available categories and their sizes vary by PC, and a profile only removes the categories you selected. The 10 GB figure in the headline is therefore an individual result, not a typical or guaranteed outcome established by Microsoft’s documentation.
Save a Disk Cleanup profile and run it

Open the Run dialog with Windows + R, or open Command Prompt. Enter

In Disk Cleanup Settings, review the categories shown on your PC. Select only the types of files you want removed, then confirm to save the choices. The available categories can differ between installations; do not select everything without checking what each category contains.

When you want to perform that cleanup, run
cleanmgr /sagerun:1. It executes the tasks saved under profile 1. Microsoft notes that/sagerun:nenumerates all drives and applies the selected profile to each, so do not assume this switch targets only one drive.Rank #2

Microsoft also documents cleanmgr /tuneup:1, which runs /sageset and /sagerun for the same profile. For a first cleanup, the separate setup and run steps give you a chance to review and save your selections before they are applied.
Use Storage Sense if you prefer automatic cleanup
Storage Sense is the built-in Settings alternative in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage, then open Storage Sense. Labels can vary by Windows release. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance says its default configuration can run when the device is low on disk space, clear unnecessary temporary files, and remove Recycle Bin content after a period.

Downloads and files from OneDrive or other cloud providers are not touched by default, but you can change those settings. Check them carefully: removing Downloads files or making cloud files online-only can affect whether they remain available locally. Storage Sense works on the system drive; manage other drives through their separate storage settings.
Choose the cleanup method that fits your files

If Windows needs more room for an update
For update-related storage problems, Microsoft points to Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, and Disk Cleanup. Its Windows update storage guidance also describes using an external storage device with at least 10 GB free as one option in that update context. That is not a requirement for running Disk Cleanup.

Microsoft’s general drive-space guidance notes that temporary storage can fill quickly again in some cases after cleanup. If the drive soon runs low, check what is using space in Settings > System > Storage rather than assuming the command failed.

The space shown by Disk Cleanup reflects the files and categories available on that particular installation. For example, 10ZiG reported that Disk Cleanup displayed up to 2.34 GB available on a Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2021 thin-client example, including 2.30 GB in device driver packages. Those are figures from that vendor’s specific example, not a benchmark for ordinary PCs. See 10ZiG’s example.

Run the built-in cleanup tools, review their categories, and judge the result from the space reported on your own device. A 10 GB recovery is possible only if enough eligible files are present; the command itself cannot create that outcome.
