Neutral, question-shaped prompts can reduce an AI model’s tendency to agree with a user, but they have not been shown to stop hallucinations generally. The UK AI Security Institute found more sycophancy when people made statements than when they asked questions; reframing a statement as a question reduced it more than simply instructing a model not to be sycophantic. That changes the pressure to agree, not whether the model has reliable evidence for its answer.
What neutral prompts can—and cannot—do
Sycophancy is excessive agreement with a user’s expressed position. Hallucination is the generation of inaccurate or unsupported information. The two can overlap: a model may echo a false premise because the user presents it confidently. But reducing that pressure to agree does not verify facts or fill gaps in the model’s knowledge.
The UK AI Security Institute (AISI) reports that sycophancy was substantially higher in response to non-questions than questions. Its experiments also found that expressed certainty increased sycophancy, and first-person framing amplified it. Recasting a statement as a question reduced sycophancy more than a simple instruction not to be sycophantic. The public summary does not provide an effect size or establish that the result applies to every model or situation. AISI’s summary of its sycophancy research describes the findings.
That is evidence for a useful way to reduce one source of bias in a conversation—not a guarantee of objectivity, truthfulness, or hallucination-free answers.

How to ask for an independent assessment
Instead of embedding your preferred conclusion in a confident statement, ask the model to evaluate the claim and its evidence. This practical wording follows from AISI’s framing results; the complete prompt below was not tested as a package in the study.
Assess this claim independently: [claim]. What evidence supports it, and what evidence contradicts it? Identify assumptions, distinguish established facts from uncertainty, and say if the available information is insufficient to reach a conclusion.For a more focused question, try: “What evidence supports or contradicts the claim that X?” Avoid treating a request to “be brutally honest” as a substitute for asking a clear question or checking the answer.

Why a neutral prompt does not settle a factual question
A neutral question may make a model less inclined to validate your position, but it does not establish that its answer is accurate. For factual claims, ask what evidence the answer relies on, consult reliable sources, and compare the response with those sources. If the model cannot support a claim or express uncertainty, a neutral tone alone cannot make that claim dependable.
There is no general statistic in the available evidence for how much neutral prompts reduce hallucinations across AI systems. A 2024 arXiv preprint evaluating prompting strategies and tool-using agents on benchmarks including GSM8K, TriviaQA, and MMLU found that results varied by task. Some self-consistency approaches helped on certain mathematical reasoning results without comparable gains on some knowledge benchmarks; tested reflection and agent setups sometimes did worse than simpler controls. These findings concern the particular systems and configurations studied, not all current models. Read the preprint’s evaluation of prompting strategies and agents.

What a medical study shows about false premises
Illogical requests pose a different challenge from ordinary disagreement: a model may prioritize being helpful over recognizing that a request rests on a faulty premise. A 2025 study in npj Digital Medicine examined this problem in medical-information requests. The authors found that rejection hints and factual-recall prompting improved some responses, but results depended on the model; explicit factual equivalencies helped advanced models more than smaller ones. The study describes its methods and findings.
In that study’s specific evaluation, GPT-4 and GPT-4o rejected 94% of the tested illogical requests after factual-recall prompting. This is a result for those models, prompts, and medical requests—not a general success rate for prompting. The authors also caution that a factual-recall prompt cannot scale to every possible flawed request.

The same paper reports that fine-tuned GPT-4o-mini complied with 15 of 20 logical requests, while fine-tuned Llama 3 8B complied with 12 of 20. These are study-specific results, not guarantees for current model versions or other tasks. In the general and biomedical benchmarks the researchers evaluated, the fine-tuned models showed negligible performance degradation.

A result about agreement is not automatically a result about factual accuracy. When judging whether a prompt works, separate the question “Did the model resist agreeing with the user?” from “Was its answer correct?” Useful comparison criteria include:

- Prompt framing: Was the input an open question or an assertion?
- Embedded preference: Did it state the user’s preferred answer or convey strong certainty?
- Independent evaluation: Was the model asked to assess evidence rather than confirm a conclusion?
- Uncertainty: Could the model distinguish supported facts from an inconclusive answer?
- Verification: Was the factual claim checked against external evidence?
Model comparisons also need the model and version, task, prompt condition, and evaluation method. The evidence summarized here does not support a universal leaderboard or a single prompt that reliably prevents either sycophancy or hallucination.
