Yes—if the tools and credentials connected to an agent allow it. MCP provides a way for an AI host to connect to tools and services; it does not automatically grant access to every company system. The effective boundary is set by the tools a server exposes and by the permissions enforced when those tools run. Depending on those permissions, a tool may read data or create, change, or delete it.

What determines what an agent can access?

An MCP setup typically connects an AI host and client to one or more MCP servers, which expose tools backed by applications, data sources, or other services. The host can provide tool definitions to the model, and tool results can enter the model’s context. The agent’s practical reach depends on the complete access chain—not just on the fact that MCP is enabled.

  • Available tools: Which tools the server exposes, and whether they can read, write, delete, or send information.
  • Identity and credentials: Which user, service account, or token a tool uses when it acts.
  • Scopes and records: Which operations and specific data that identity is allowed to reach.
  • Enforcement point: Whether the server or protected tool checks authorization when each request is made.

Anthropic’s connector documentation says remote MCP tools can read, create, modify, or delete data in connected applications according to the permissions granted. That describes possible capabilities, not universal access: a connector cannot reach data its effective identity and tools cannot access.

How a connection can become a data-exposure risk

A connector can have more authority than the person asking the agent to use it. OWASP describes this as a confused-deputy risk: a server may act with its own broad privileges rather than the requesting user’s permissions. Shared credentials create a related problem—everyone using a connector may inherit the reach of the same credential.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Tool definitions and responses are also part of the security boundary. OWASP describes tool poisoning, changing tool definitions (sometimes called rug pulls), cross-server tool shadowing, over-scoped tokens, supply-chain compromise, unsafe local server access, and data exfiltration through legitimate channels as MCP risks. These are threat scenarios, not evidence that every agent or connector is vulnerable.

Example: instructions hidden in tool content

A malicious server response could contain instructions intended to steer an agent toward reading sensitive files or calling another tool that can reach them. It might also try to persuade the agent to put sensitive material into an ordinary search query, email subject, or other outbound field. The resulting call could use an authorized tool in an unintended way.

OWASP’s tool-poisoning guidance treats server responses as untrusted and recommends execution-time restrictions, approved-server allowlists, isolation of privileged tools from external servers, and confirmation of sensitive operations outside the model context. A system prompt by itself is not a reliable backend access control.

Controls that reduce the risk

Control area Safer approach Why it matters
Identity and scope Use narrow scopes and credentials dedicated to each server; avoid shared, broadly privileged credentials where possible. Limits the reach of a misused, compromised, or confused tool.
Authorization Enforce access checks at the server or protected-tool boundary, using tokens intended for the relevant service. Model instructions should not be the only thing preventing access.
Tool separation Keep high-privilege file, database, and internal API tools isolated from untrusted external servers. Reduces the chance that hostile content can influence a call to a more privileged tool.
Server and schema trust Vet server publishers; review tool descriptions and schemas; detect changes to server behavior or definitions. Tool metadata and later responses can create injection or supply-chain risks.
Input and output handling Validate tool arguments and returned content; use structured schemas and strict network allowlists. Arguments generated by an LLM and content returned by a server can contain unsafe values or instructions.
Human approval Require explicit, independent review for sensitive, destructive, or data-sharing actions, with the full call details visible. Allows a person to catch an unintended action before it executes.
Governance Control which connectors users can add, audit tool invocations, and review access periodically. Organization-level controls help constrain and monitor deployment.

OWASP’s MCP Security Cheat Sheet states: “Grant each MCP server the minimum permissions needed for its function.” In practice, that means granting each connector only the data and operations it needs, rather than treating approval of a server as approval for unlimited access.

Where authorization can be enforced

The MCP authorization documentation describes two patterns. Which one fits depends on whether all tools are protected and how a service separates protected functions from public ones.

Pattern How it works When it fits
Per-server authorization Every request to the server endpoint requires a valid bearer token. When every tool on the server should require authorization.
Per-tool authorization Protected tools require authorization, while public tools can remain available without a token. When a service deliberately separates public functions from protected ones.

Whichever pattern is used, check that authorization is enforced when the operation runs. A model’s instruction not to access a record is not a substitute for a server-side permission check.

Questions to ask before connecting a company system

  • What exact tools will be enabled, and which can write, delete, or send data—not only read it?
  • Whose identity does each tool use? Is it the requesting user’s identity or a service credential?
  • What scopes, records, and operations can that identity reach? Are credentials shared among connector users?
  • Does the server check authorization for each protected operation, or rely on the agent to follow instructions?
  • Can high-privilege internal tools be isolated from servers that return untrusted content?
  • How are server publishers, schemas, tool changes, and unexpected behavior reviewed?
  • Are sensitive or external actions shown in full and held for approval before execution?
  • Can the organization control connector installation and audit calls and access over time?

Anthropic’s agent framework says, “Agent systems should be designed to safeguard sensitive data and prevent misuse when interacting with other systems or agents.” Those safeguards need to be implemented in the tools, services, and organizational controls around the agent, not assumed from the conversational interface.

What is not established about how often this happens

The available OWASP and Anthropic guidance describes attack paths and mitigations; it does not establish a directly attributable incident rate or percentage for sensitive-data exposure by MCP-connected agents. The risks above should therefore be read as ways exposure could occur, not as a measure of how often it does. OWASP’s third-party MCP server guide was published November 4, 2025; the cited product and security documentation was accessed October 3, 2026.
