A developer set out to run Linux on Nintendo hardware but instead ported LUnix, a Unix-like operating system, to a Japanese Famicom paired with its Famicom Disk System (FDS). That fuller setup used the FDS for extra memory and disk support. A separate report describes booting the LUnix kernel on an unmodified NES with an EverDrive cartridge, but that is not the same as the Famicom-and-FDS setup.
What actually ran on Nintendo hardware?
The operating system was Little Unix, or LUnix—not Linux. LUnix is a Unix-like system originally associated with Commodore 64 and 128 computers. BetaNews reported on February 15, 2024, that developer DeCrAzYo began by asking whether Linux could run on an NES, then changed course when the console’s limitations made that goal impractical. The project ran its code on the Nintendo console’s processor; it was not a Raspberry Pi hidden inside the machine, nor was the console merely being used as a display.

The project’s lng-fds repository describes itself as a Famicom Disk System port of LUnix Next Generation. That is a port of a Unix-like OS, not evidence of a Linux distribution running on the console.
Why the Famicom Disk System mattered
Memory was the central obstacle. Hackaday reports that the original NES has 2 KB of RAM and 2 KB of video RAM, while the Famicom Disk System added 32 KB of RAM. BetaNews also describes the FDS as providing an interrupt timer and floppy storage. The additional RAM made it possible to use shell utilities that would not fit in the NES’s limited built-in memory.

The full demonstration therefore used a Japanese Famicom with an FDS, rather than a standard western NES alone. The extra hardware was part of the system’s practical capabilities: it provided more memory and disk functionality, while the port added support for keyboard input and the console display.
What the port required
This was not a matter of copying an operating system onto a cartridge and pressing Start. DeCrAzYo adapted LUnix for the target hardware with a new memory map and initialization code, as well as drivers for keyboard input and the display. Those changes let the software start up and interact with peripherals in a system the original OS was not designed for.

How the reported setups differ
| Setup | What is reported | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Japanese Famicom with FDS | The fuller LUnix port setup, with the FDS supplying additional RAM and disk support; the port also included keyboard and display support. | That a standard western NES by itself provides the same shell, utilities, keyboard, or disk experience. |
| Unmodified NES with an EverDrive cartridge | Tom’s Hardware reports that the LUnix kernel could be booted from an EverDrive on an unmodified NES. | That this cartridge route offered all the capabilities of the Famicom/FDS configuration. The report distinguishes the kernel boot from the fuller setup. |
The sources establish these broad differences, not a compatibility matrix covering NES revisions, flash-cart models, or every possible hardware combination.
Could you reproduce the demonstration?
The LUnix port’s source is public in the project repository. Reproducing the fuller setup means working with the Famicom Disk System hardware used by the project; it is not a generic add-on for a western NES. The hardware is vintage, and current availability, condition, and compatibility were not established in the cited reports.

- one NES Classic Controller
- and all 30 games, installed and ready-to-play.
- E10+ w/ Mild Violence
DeCrAzYo also discussed a possible expansion: “We could create a cartridge that provides more RAM… wire up a keyboard… and even add a disk drive for good measure.” Tom’s Hardware presents this as a hypothetical, not as a completed cartridge build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, can Linux run on an NES?
The reported project does not show Linux running on a Nintendo NES. It shows a developer who investigated that idea and instead adapted LUnix, a Unix-like OS, for Nintendo hardware. The fullest account is a Famicom with its FDS; the reported EverDrive kernel boot on an unmodified NES is a more limited and distinct demonstration.
