Yes. LibreOffice Calc and Gnumeric provide Linux command-line options for converting Excel workbooks, and Gnumeric documents a formula-recalculation option. That does not guarantee that every workbook will survive conversion unchanged: check the worksheets, formulas, calculated values, and Excel-specific features that matter in the converted file.
Which Linux command-line tools can convert Excel workbooks?
LibreOffice Calc
LibreOffice documents a command-line conversion pattern that can write an Excel XLSX file:
soffice --convert-to OutputFileExtension[:OutputFilterName[:OutputFilterParams]] [--outdir output_dir]
For XLSX output, LibreOffice’s filter documentation identifies the Calc Excel 2007 XML filter. Use the documented filter name when you need to specify it explicitly; the exact conversion command can depend on the input file and desired output location. Calc recognizes Excel A1 formula syntax, including cross-sheet references such as =Sheet2!C4. That syntax support helps with common formulas, but it does not establish that every Excel function or workbook feature behaves identically after conversion. Gnumeric ssconvert
Gnumeric’s ssconvert is a command-line spreadsheet format converter. Its manual documents Excel exporters and a --recalc option for recalculating formulas before writing the output. It also documents sheet selection for some exporters, so check the selected exporter’s behavior if the complete workbook must be retained. Gnumeric’s ssconvert manual lists its options and formats.

How to verify worksheets and formulas after conversion
Run the conversion on a copy, keep the original workbook, and inspect the result in the application that will use it. Check the properties your workflow depends on:
- Confirm the output opens and has the expected worksheet names and count.
- Check that cross-sheet formulas remain formulas, still refer to the intended worksheets, and produce the expected values.
- Test external references and formulas that rely on Excel-specific behavior.
- If the workbook uses charts, named ranges, formatting, macros, or data connections, verify that each remains usable.
These checks matter because documented import and export support is not a certification of round-trip fidelity for every workbook. LibreOffice documents a particular external-reference caveat: Excel external sheet addresses built inside INDIRECT are not automatically translated to Calc address syntax in the described case. Workbooks using that pattern need explicit testing. LibreOffice’s INDIRECT function documentation describes the issue.

How to choose between LibreOffice and Gnumeric
Choose based on the workbook and the conversion behavior you need to verify, rather than assuming one tool is universally more faithful.

What conversion support does—and does not—promise
Both tools document relevant Excel conversion capabilities, but the available documentation does not establish a complete compatibility matrix or guarantee that all worksheets, formulas, and specialized features will survive conversion for every workbook. Treat the result as a file to validate, especially when it depends on external references, Excel-specific formula behavior, macros, or connections.
