No—not according to Google’s current Chromebook Help documentation. It lists cameras among the features that are not yet supported in the Linux development environment, commonly called Crostini. Google has not announced a support date, ChromeOS version, or device rollout plan, so “not yet” should not be read as evidence that camera access is close.
What the camera limitation means for Crostini
Google’s Set up Linux on your Chromebook help page lists “Cameras aren’t yet supported” under the Linux environment’s unsupported features. That is the clearest current official guidance for people trying to use a Chromebook camera from a Linux app.
The statement concerns apps running in the Linux development environment, not every app on the Chromebook. ChromeOS-native apps and websites opened in Chrome have separate ways to use the camera. A camera that works in the ChromeOS Camera app or in a browser therefore does not establish that a Linux app can access it.
Why USB sharing and webcam compatibility do not prove Crostini support
ChromeOS.dev explains that, for security reasons, USB and microphone permissions are not shared with Linux by default. Its Linux setup documentation and Linux FAQ describe selective access and case-by-case sharing for certain devices, not a general promise that USB cameras can be passed to Crostini.

Google’s Chromebook Help page separately says Android devices are supported over USB while other devices are not yet supported. The available guidance does not identify cameras as an eligible device for Linux USB sharing. Enabling a USB preference, adding a USB-C adapter, installing Linux drivers, or changing camera privacy settings is therefore not a documented Crostini camera workaround.
Likewise, Google’s ChromeOS Compatible – Webcams Specification v1.3 describes compatibility with ChromeOS: a webcam must support UVC 1.0 or later and work with ChromeOS’s built-in uvcvideo driver without additional software. That specification does not say the camera is available inside Crostini.

What you can use instead
ChromeOS Camera app
Google’s release notes document external USB cameras—including webcams, microscopes, and document cameras—for the Google Camera app. This is a ChromeOS-native route, not Linux-container access. If your immediate need is to take a photo or capture video in ChromeOS, try the Camera app and check whether your external camera is recognized.
Chrome and web apps
For a website or web app, check both ChromeOS’s device-level camera access and the site’s camera permission in Chrome. Google’s Manage your camera, microphone & location settings help page explains the ChromeOS privacy controls. These controls can help host-side apps, but they do not override the Linux environment’s documented camera limitation.

Is Crostini camera support coming soon?
Google’s use of “yet” indicates that the feature is currently unsupported in the help text; it is not a release commitment. The official sources available here do not specify when camera access might arrive, which ChromeOS versions or Chromebook models might receive it, or whether managed-device configurations will differ. Until Google publishes such details, there is no substantiated basis for calling support imminent.
