Their 2026 prototype uses a digital encoder and an optical decoder to screen multiple videos in parallel. In a visible-spectrum experiment on the Celeb-DF dataset, its 15-video configuration achieved 97.79% accuracy. The reported energy advantages are estimates for specific configurations, not proof of lower real-world operating costs.
How the light-based detector works
The system is hybrid, not an AI detector running entirely on light. A digital front end samples video frames, detects and aligns faces, then extracts spatial and Fourier-domain features. It encodes those features as a phase pattern on a programmable spatial light modulator.
The encoded light propagates through an optical decoder. Paired positive and negative detector regions measure the resulting signal, which is used to classify a video as authentic or fake. Spatial multiplexing lets the optical stage process several video channels in a single propagation pass. The primary demonstration used a free-space optical decoder; other experiments tested different arrangements, including diffractive layers.
The researchers describe the system as a potential first-stage screen for platforms or data centers: suspicious videos could then be sent to more computationally intensive digital verification. It is not presented as a consumer app or a ready-to-buy product. The authors disclose a pending patent application filed through UCLA.

How accurate was the prototype?
In the primary visible-spectrum experiment, Kashani, Chen, and Ozcan reported 97.79% accuracy, 99.86% sensitivity, and 95.72% specificity for the 15-video configuration on Celeb-DF. The blind experimental test reserved 105 real and 105 fake videos from the dataset’s official test split. These figures describe that dataset and setup; they are not a general reliability rate for arbitrary videos.
Sensitivity is the share of fake videos correctly identified as fake; specificity is the share of real videos correctly identified as real. Accuracy combines correct classifications across both groups. These measures answer different questions, so the high sensitivity does not mean the system will avoid false positives.

More parallel channels came with a trade-off
On the same Celeb-DF test videos, the 18-video configuration achieved 96.13% accuracy, lower than the 15-video result. The authors identify increased optical cross-talk as one possible factor. The results do not show that adding channels increases capacity without affecting performance.
Results on other video sets
Performance varied with the dataset and optical-decoder configuration. On DeepSpeak, a more challenging face-swap dataset, the paper reports about 89% accuracy with the free-space decoder and about 96% with two diffractive layers. Those numbers should not be treated as a direct comparison with the Celeb-DF result because the decoder arrangement differed.

For Gemini-generated videos, the 15-video design achieved 94.80% experimental accuracy after limited fine-tuning; the 18-video design achieved 95.16% in that transfer-learning evaluation. The paper says fewer than 1% of a training pass was used. These are fine-tuned results, not an untouched test of performance on any unknown generator, nor evidence of zero-shot detection.
Does it actually save energy?
The study estimates energy use for particular digital and optical configurations; it does not report a field deployment, a measured whole-system electricity bill, or total ownership costs. Its optical decoder can process channels in parallel, but the digital encoder remains part of the pipeline and consumes energy.

For the reported lightweight encoder sampling 12 frames, Kashani, Chen, and Ozcan estimate 178.82 millijoules per video using an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 power-efficiency and throughput assumption. That is a modeled encoder estimate, not a measurement of the complete apparatus. A lighter encoder configuration is estimated at 39.30 millijoules per video; the paper reports changed accuracy and specificity for that trade-off and finds that a deeper optical decoder can recover some performance without increasing decoder energy.
A secondary explainer reports an estimated 1.38–4.11 millijoules per video for the optical decoder and 37.8%–41.7% lower end-to-end energy for lighter-encoder configurations versus the study’s digital baseline. These estimates apply to the study’s configurations and assumptions. They do not establish a fixed energy saving—or lower cost—for a deployed service. Electricity prices, hardware acquisition and upkeep, optical stability, and the cost of sending flagged videos to further verification all matter to a real-world comparison.

What the robustness tests do—and do not—show
The paper reports tests involving video degradation and black-box adversarial attacks, and argues that physical optical parameters are harder to reverse-engineer. Those findings are bounded by the attacks and conditions tested. They do not show that the detector cannot be fooled or that it will withstand every manipulation encountered in practice.
Is it available to buy?
The reported work is an experimental research system, not a retail detector. The paper does not give a commercial price, total-cost comparison, product launch date, or named commercial partner. Its results support further investigation of optical hardware as a high-throughput screening component, but do not establish that light has already made deepfake detection cheaper in operation.
