Yes. You can use VLC with a TV by running VLC on an Android TV device, casting to a compatible Chromecast, or sending media to a compatible DLNA/UPnP renderer. These are different methods, and none works with every TV, source device, VLC version, or media file. Choose the route based on what your TV or attached streaming device can receive.

Choose the right way to use VLC with your TV

Route Where VLC runs What the TV needs What is established
Android TV On the TV or Android TV device An Android TV device that supports VLC for Android VideoLAN lists Android TV support and playback of media files and network streams, including browsing NAS/shared drives. VideoLAN: VLC for Android
Chromecast On a source device that sends playback A compatible Chromecast receiver and source app/platform combination VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 release documentation lists streaming to Chromecast devices; it does not guarantee every current setup. VideoLAN: VLC 3.0 release
DLNA/UPnP renderer On a source device that sends playback A renderer with compatible DLNA/UPnP support A VLC developer patch record describes casting to DLNA Media Renderers implementing AVTransport, initially using the default media format. It is not a compatibility list or current consumer guide. VLC developer mailing list: DLNA renderer support

Start by checking two things: which device runs VLC, and what the TV or streaming box can receive. A television being called a “smart TV” does not establish that it runs Android TV or supports Chromecast or DLNA rendering.

Run VLC directly on an Android TV device

This is the most direct route when the TV or a connected box runs Android TV: VLC runs on that TV-side device and plays the media there. VideoLAN lists Android TV support for VLC for Android; its page showed version 3.7.0 when accessed on October 8, 2026. The page also lists playback of audio and video files, network streams, and browsing NAS/shared drives. Check VideoLAN’s VLC for Android page for current app details.

Network playback is not the same thing as casting. Opening a network stream or NAS file in VLC means the Android TV device plays it; it does not mean VLC has sent that file from another device to the TV. Support for Android TV also should not be generalized to Roku, Apple TV, or every other smart-TV operating system.

Cast from VLC to Chromecast

VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 release page lists Chromecast streaming and says VLC “Can stream to Chromecast devices, even in formats not supported natively.” That statement belongs to the VLC 3.0 release documentation; it is not a promise that every current VLC build, phone or computer, Chromecast, or file will work together. The same page specifically notes Chromecast support from a phone on Android.

Because the available documentation is release-specific, check the current VLC version and platform you plan to use, and confirm that the receiver appears as an available destination in that setup. The cited material does not establish a universal menu path or casting workflow across VLC platforms and versions, so avoid relying on instructions for a different device or build.

Try DLNA/UPnP only when the receiver supports rendering

Some TVs and media devices support DLNA, but the label alone does not prove they can receive playback from VLC. The VLC developer record describes casting to DLNA Media Renderers that implement AVTransport, with the initial implementation using the default media format. Treat this as evidence that a DLNA renderer route exists in VLC development—not as confirmation that a particular TV supports it, that every format is supported, or that the feature is exposed identically in current builds.

Check the TV or receiver documentation for DLNA/UPnP renderer capability, then verify that your VLC platform and version can discover and send to that device. If it is not discoverable or the file does not play, the protocol label alone is not enough to diagnose compatibility.

Check the media file and playback performance

Compatibility depends on more than the TV connection. It can vary with the source device, receiver, VLC platform and version, and media format. The cited sources do not provide a complete compatibility matrix for codecs, subtitle tracks, resolutions, TV models, or current VLC builds, so test the actual file and setup rather than assuming that one successful file proves all files will work.

For performance issues, VideoLAN says hardware decoding often gives better performance but is not supported on all devices. Check the decoding options available on the source or TV-side device you are using, and test the particular media file. A playback problem may be specific to a device’s decoding support or the receiver’s format handling; the available evidence does not identify a universal fix.

Audio-only casting is version-dependent

A January 2025 VLC Android development mailing-list change describes adding a setting to “cast audio only.” This is a development record, not a guarantee that the option is available in every release or installation. If you want audio without video, look for the setting in your VLC Android version rather than assuming it is present. VLC Android development mailing list: audio-only casting change

Quick troubleshooting checks

  • TV or device is not found: Confirm the TV-side device supports the receiver route you chose, then check compatibility with your specific VLC platform and version.
  • A network file plays in VLC but not on the TV: Network playback in VLC and casting to a receiver are separate capabilities; confirm the receiver can accept playback over the chosen route.
  • One file works and another does not: Test the actual media file. The sources do not establish support for every format or subtitle configuration.
  • Playback stutters or is slow: Check whether hardware decoding is available on the device. VideoLAN notes it can improve performance but is not supported everywhere.
  • You cannot find audio-only casting: The option is documented in a January 2025 development change; availability depends on the VLC Android version.
