Asana has built-in time tracking on eligible plans. In a project, go to Customize → Fields → Add → Time your work to add estimated and actual time to tasks. You can record actual time with Asana’s timer or enter it manually; the available features depend on your plan.
What Asana’s built-in time tracking records
Asana’s native feature provides two task fields:
- Estimated time is the planned duration or time budget for a task.
- Actual time is the time spent working on it. You can run the built-in timer or enter time manually.
Asana says time tracked on subtasks rolls up to the parent task. Its time data can also be used in dashboards, and time entries can be exported as a CSV. Examples on Asana’s feature page include viewing estimated time by assignee and actual time by project section. The developer API reference describes time-tracking entries with a duration in minutes, an entered-on date, and project attribution.
How to add time tracking to a project
- Open the Asana project where you want to track work.
- Select Customize → Fields → Add → Time your work.
- Use the estimated-time field to set a task’s planned duration, if needed.
- For actual time, start the built-in timer while working, then pause or stop it when finished. Alternatively, enter the actual time manually.
After adding the fields, use them on project tasks. The timer is useful for recording work as it happens; manual entry suits work logged after the fact.
Which Asana plans include time tracking?
Asana’s Help Center lists native time tracking for Advanced, Enterprise, Enterprise+, and legacy Business/Enterprise plans. Its feature page uses the names Advanced, Enterprise, and Enterprise Plus. Since plan names and entitlements can change—and the official pages do not use exactly the same labels—check Asana’s current plan information or your account’s plan details to confirm access.

When the Timesheets and Budgets add-on may fit better
Native task time tracking may be enough if you primarily need estimates, actual time, and project-level reporting. Asana presents Timesheets and Budgets as a separate add-on for teams that also need budgets, user rates, billable and non-billable time, or timesheet submission and approval.
Asana’s pricing page lists the add-on at $5.99 per user per month, billed annually, and shows availability for Starter, Advanced, Enterprise, and Enterprise+. That is a vendor-listed price and availability claim; check the live pricing page before buying because terms may change.

Third-party time-tracking options
If Asana’s native feature is unavailable on your plan or does not suit your workflow, Asana’s time-tracking feature page names Clockify and Everhour as integrations. Asana’s app directory also describes a TrackingTime Chrome button: install the extension, open an Asana task, and use the button to start or stop a timer. The listing says a newly tracked task and its project are added to TrackingTime.
TrackingTime is built by a third-party developer, so its listing should not be read as an Asana guarantee. Before choosing any integration, verify that it still works with your Asana setup and check its current features, terms, and data handling. A separate tracker may also mean managing time records outside Asana.

For a simple task-level record, start by checking whether native time tracking is included in your plan. If the team needs financial controls or formal timesheet review, compare the add-on or an integration against those requirements rather than assuming the basic task fields provide them.
